Through the Garden Gate — 30 Gardens for 30 Years

Do yourself a favour and don’t miss this year’s Through the Garden Gate.

An all-day rainfall didn’t stop two busloads of eager garden writers from enjoying a preview of the TBG’s 30th annual TTGG tour  which takes place in North Rosedale and Moore Park on Saturday and Sunday, June 10 and 11.

Despite the grey sky and soggy weather on the day of the media preview, we saw a brilliantly coloured palette of spring flowers and fabulous foliage. The neighbourhood for this special anniversary tour showcases a collection of gardens illustrating just about everything you might want to see on a garden tour – inspirational landscaping and hardscaping, complementary plantings, statuary, rockeries, ravine settings, water features, both formal and informal designs, secret gardens, woodland gardens, children’s’ gardens … and more.

In honour of its 30th anniversary, this year’s tour offers 30 gardens rather than the usual 20. Celebration Stations will be featured along the way, offering free seeds, buttons and Canada flags in celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial.

Tour headquarters will be located at Chorley Park, 245 Douglas Dr., where refreshments can be purchased. TTGG takes place on both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Armed with a guidebook and a map, you can tour at your own pace, hopping on and off complimentary shuttle buses along the route. Or, you can sign up for the Petals and Pedals Bike Tour and cycle around the route with a Master Gardener on Wheels and an architectural expert. Snacks and a picnic lunch are included in this tour, conducted in partnership with Toronto Bicycle Tours.

If you have questions about plants in the gardens just ask one of the Toronto Master Gardeners stationed in each garden. (I’ll be posted on Sunday at 127 Douglas Dr.)
