Garden Hall Courtyard

The sunken courtyard provides a natural amphitheatre for outdoor gatherings and may be used independently or in conjunction with the Westview Terrace which it is linked by a stone bridge. The trees, shrubs, grasses, sedges and perennials in this garden display year-round colour, interesting texture, form and fragrance.

Highlights:

  • Acid soil: essential mineral nutrients are more readily dissolved in acidic water and are therefore more available to plants rooted in acid soil. While many plants find these minerals toxic in excessive amounts, certain plants, known as ericaceous plants, thrive on them. This garden’s acidic soil provides an ideal environment for the planting of ericaceous trees, shrubs and perennials. The addition of bark mulch and its ongoing decomposition helps this soil to remain acidic. Acid tolerant plants found in this garden include Japanese maples, rhododendrons, blueberries and a variety of conifers.
