Botanical Nerd Word: Calyptra

Calyptra: Hood or cap, as with the fused calyx of California poppies (Eschscholzia californica) or onions (Allium)*

The papery covering of these Allium blooms is called a calyptra. It splits and falls away as the flowers expand.
