Botanical Nerd Word: Autochore

jewelweed seed pod

Autochore: A plant that is the major agent in the distribution of its own seeds or spores (as by special ejecting organs).*

Jewelweeds (Impatiens pallida and I. capensis) produce spring-loaded seed pods that are triggered by the slightest touch. When the pods burst, they fling seeds outward in all directions. This is where the plants get their other common name: Touch-me-nots.
