About Fernando Shanthilal

Although I currently thrive in the IT sector as a Senior Project Manager, my journey began in the world of Botany, earning my first degree in the field and immersing myself in Sri Lanka’s rich agricultural traditions. From managing crop plantations like rubber, paddy, and cash crops, to perfecting the art of bud grafting for rubber, mango, and rose plants, I developed a deep-rooted passion for nurturing life.

My love for horticulture led me to join the Toronto Master Gardeners program, expanding my expertise. However, my true calling lies in sustainable food production—striving to reduce humanity’s footprint on natural forests, lakes, and oceans. This vision sparked my enthusiasm for growing microgreens and cultivating mushrooms, hobbies that flourished during the lockdown era.

Beyond plants, I’m a keen photographer with an eye for nature’s beauty, and I actively explore sustainable practices like wastewater treatment and composting. Whether working with technology or nurturing life, I’m driven by a desire to create a harmonious balance between innovation and nature.
