Botanical Nerd Word: Rhizome

Rhizome: An underground, usually horizontal stem, such as that of ginger.*

Irises grow from horizontal rhizomes that look much like pieces of ginger. Though they look a lot like ginger, don’t eat them – they’re poisonous!
