Toronto Botanical Garden Expands Outdoor Learning with a Weather-Protected Teaching Pavilion
On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Garden celebrated the completion of a new weather-protected pavilion as part of its Teaching Garden, made possible by generous donors, including the City of Toronto and a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
The 657-square-foot pavilion is the newest addition to TBG’s Teaching Garden that welcomes thousands of children each year to TBG for nature-based programming. Established in 1998 with support from the Garden Club of Toronto, the Teaching Garden provides hands-on experiences in nature nurturing children’s social, psychological, academic, and physical well-being.
TBG’s new pavilion now provides more sheltered space, making it possible to host more than one classroom of school children at a time, while also providing more activation space for community events.
“As a Garden connected to Toronto’s expansive ravine system, we are committed to providing equitable access to nature. The public is invited to experience the Pavilion at TBG’s free Ravine Festival this October.” says Director of Education, Natalie Harder. “The addition of the Pavilion is the next step in breaking down barriers to outdoor education and engagement.” Learn more about the Ravine Festival here.
“This new pavilion is a game-changer for TBG,” adds Stephanie Jutila, CEO. “It’s extending the Garden’s programming into early spring and late fall, while offering a safe, shaded refuge during periods of intense sun or inclement weather. Thanks to multiple funders and TBG working in partnership with one another, more people can gather, learn, connect, and explore nature in every season.”
