Reporting to the Director of Education, the Adult Education Supervisor is responsible for adult education programs which advance TBG’s mission to connect people to plants, inspiring them to live in harmony with nature. The supervisor will oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of approximately 80 courses, workshops, lectures and special events each year related to gardening, art, floral design, conservation and food.

Duties & Responsibilities

Administration and Finances

  • Produce reports on class attendance, revenue and expenses.
  • Create budgets and financial statements.
  • Schedule, coordinate and manage a vibrant team of volunteers to support classes.

Program Planning, Delivery and Evaluation

  • Research and confirm external instructors and speakers throughout the year.
  • Research and development of new adult education programs taking in to account feedback from key stakeholders and market research
  • Provide timely and helpful communication with TBG members, volunteers and students.
  • Manage professional relationships with instructors and speakers regarding course development, registration, evaluation and compensation.
  • Liaise with partnering organizations and individuals to manage TBG’s Floral Design program, Urban Beekeeping Program and Garden Design Program.
  • Plan small graduation ceremony every fall for students of the above-mentioned programs.
  • Consult regularly with TBG staff, members, volunteers and students to plan and evaluate programs.
  • Assist in the planning, registration and delivery of TBG lectures and symposia.


  • Liaise with communications department to create and update website and social media content and supply images for adult education programs.
  • Work with external instructors and partner organizations to promote programs, including the exploration of cross-promotion opportunities.
  • Create posters using Canva or other design programs.

Other Duties

  • Take on other duties as assigned from time to time, including assist with large TBG events.

Education and Professional Qualifications

  • College diploma or university degree in education, horticulture, conservation or a related field


  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with education program and event planning, delivery and evaluation
  • Multi-year experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with, or a willingness to learn, Event Pro, Visio, Eventbrite and Canva
  • Knowledge of database software, with Raiser’s Edge preferred
  • Experience working with volunteers in a not-for-profit setting
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, beekeeping, gardening and/or ecology an asset

Retail Shop Manager (Full-Time)

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing, inspiring and organizing our team of volunteer sales associates
  • Organizing and supervising a small staff and volunteers in the procedures of inventory receiving, pricing and storage, purchasing and merchandising, P.O.P system use and cash management, financial reporting and inventory control (sales floor and storage)
  • Working collaboratively with Retail and Volunteer Services colleagues on special events, both in-house and off-site and ensuring an atmosphere of warm, friendly customer serviceto TBG visitors and members

Duties and Responsibilities

Team Leadership:

  • Provide direction and support to Shop staff and volunteers
  • Collaborate with TBG’s Head of Volunteer Services to develop and maintain a full roster of volunteer sales associates, including responsibility for training, assessment and “volunteer recognition”
  • Schedule and organize information and training sessions for Shop volunteers
  • Schedule volunteer associates’ shifts to maintain a necessary complement of customer support through both quiet and busy periods
  • Provide constructive feedback and appreciation to volunteers
  • Ensure cleanliness of Shop, merchandise and fixturing, and schedule needed cleaning and/or repairs with maintenance team
  • Attend TBG staff and volunteer meetings and report on current and upcoming Shop activities    

Business Management:

  • Prepare and control the Shop’s budget to maximize profitability and efficiency
  • Analyze sales and revenue reports and make forecasts
  • Work with the Shop Buyer/Merchandiser to source, order and reorder merchandise appropriate for TBG’s specific profile and mission
  • Work with and support the retail administrator
  • Attend gift shows and visit suppliers’ showrooms, as needed; maintain excellent relationships with suppliers and vendors
  • Support and collaborate with the Shop Buyer/Merchandiser to maintain attractive visual merchandising, with timely change/rotation of stock and variation of themes and décor
  • Organize and assist with shipping and receiving of Shop inventory and the management of invoicing
  • Ensure that an accurate system of inventory control is in place and followed meticulously, minimizing loss/damage/discards
  • Schedule and organize promotions and Shop-specific events throughout the year
  • With support from the Financial Analyst, balance daily transactions and ensure timely reconciliation of invoices, processing of merchandise returns and monthly reports
  • Create merchandise SKU numbers and ensure proper set-up on internal system to reflect established pricing and margin guidelines
  • Minimize loss/damage/discards and provide documentation on a timely basis
  • Organize and execute an end-of-year inventory and meet with auditors as required
  • Manage weekly Shop log reports
  • Manage the Shop float and supplies
  • Manage Shop sales software
  • Provide timely information on customer feedback, sales trends and opportunities
  • Consult and coordinate with the Adult Education Coordinator for course supplies and/or TBG lectures
  • Serve as retail point person for TBG at Canada Blooms, TBG Plant Sale and any other off-site pop-up retail opportunities


  • Minimum of 3 years retail store experience in a supervisory position
  • Knowledge of retail management best practices
  • Knowledge of horticulture/gardening is an asset
  • Proven financial ability
  • Relevant computer skills (Microsoft Office, as well as Point-of-Sale software)
  • Experience working with volunteers is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to train and motivate volunteers and to assess and enhance performance
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including holidays, nights and weekends as needed
  • A valid driver’s licence is required
