DESCRIPTION:Join us and learn the art of manipulating foliage!Manipulating foliage is one of the most important techniques in floral design and indispensable in modern\, contemporary\, and abstract work. Manipulating foliage in a design can create rhythm\, interest\, impact\, and abstraction. In this hands-on course learn how to use techniques like rolling\, plaiting\, braiding\, and boondoggling on leaves such as aspidistra\, flax\, and palm. All foliage plant material is provided for this class. A $100 course fee for the foliage material will be paid directly to your instructor. Information on how to submit payment for these materials will be provided prior to the start of your first class. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Fall birding nature walk!\n\n\nFall migration is well underway! Join TBG horticulturist and avid birder\, Sasan Beni\, for an engaging walk through the gardens and Wilket Creek Ravine\, as you seek out the wildlife that call this place home. Learn how to identify the many different species passing through\, and how you can help them in their journey. \nBring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat. \nAs with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. Please be patient and considerate. The tour will not be rescheduled due to a lack of bird sightings. His home is a revolving door of tropical plants. Beni is also passionate about birdwatching and wildlife photography. For composers like Vanhal and Mysliveček\, the city offered a gateway into Italian musical life at the turn of the 19th century. It was also during this period that the double bass emerged as a true solo and chamber instrument\, thanks in no small part to the virtuosity of Venetian-born Domenico Dragonetti. \n\n\n\nThis program explores the expressive possibilities of an unusual trio: violin\, cello\, and double bass. Join us for a full-day Honey Harvest experience where you’ll learn how to extract honey from hive to jar—straight from the beehives happily living at the Toronto Botanical Garden and around our City. Guided by our expert beekeepers from Bees Are Life\, you’ll explore the entire honey harvesting process\, from uncapping and spinning the frames\, to reclaiming the beeswax\, to filtering and bottling your own golden jar to take home. All materials provided. Please note: While we won’t be visiting the beehives themselves\, you’ll still get an up-close look at the tools\, techniques\, and traditions of honey extraction in a safe\, hands-on environment. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting introductory workshop on beading and leatherwork with 2 Thunderbirds: Skye & Lee!During this workshop\, participants will learn to make their own beaded medicine pouch. Participants will learn flat stitch beadwork and have access to traditional materials\, including moose and deer leather.  Traditional teachings are woven throughout the workshop lesson. Lee learned the art of beading as a child from a healer in the Grand River community. Lee loves to teach the art of leatherwork and beadwork because it is a form of Medicine to her\, allowing her to continue to pass on her knowledge and ensure the next generation has the chance to access traditional ways of knowing and being. Lee holds a B.A. in paralegal studies. Lee published an article through Humber College in 2019 titled “Education and Indigenous Access to Justice.” Lee’s Indigenous Boutique began operations in 2020 after the Pandemic shut down the Pow Wow Trail\, leaving the family business and launching an exclusive beadwork & medicine website. SUMMARY:Botanical Mixed Media Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore your creativity with mixed media painting!Join artist Nancy Falconi on a creative journey as she guides you through the photo transfer process\, transforming a photograph from the Toronto Botanical Garden into a mixed media painting! Get ready to master the 3 steps to a successful photo transfer. Using graphite you will depict the intricacy and details in the transferred botanical photograph\, focusing on defining shadows and shapes. Drawing inspiration from master graphite artists\, we will delve into five drawing techniques tailored for graphite work. Following this\, participants will complete the painting with acrylic paint. By the end of the class\, you will acquire the ability to transform photographic images by enhancing them with acrylic paint and graphite\, resulting in photographic paintings. The techniques acquired in this session will enable you to produce mixed media paintings based on your botanical photographs. No prior experience or drawing background required. It was a reunion with a long lost love that dates back to the photos she would take of her three younger sisters as a child. Her lifestyle photographs have graced the pages of various publications like Entrepreneur Magazine\, Organic Gardening\, Yoga Journal\, Today’s Parent and Canadian Living. As a contributing photographer for Getty Images since 2006 her work has been published in many International Commercial print campaigns. As her career progressed Nancy’s focus shifted to photographing the natural world and its’ creatures\, highlighting the interconnectedness of all living beings. It also shifted to exploring different art forms at institutions like the Toronto School of Art and R & F in New York. Nancy integrated her photographic skills with painting mediums to craft unique mixed media artworks. Her work has been exhibited in Galleries\, Art Fairs\, Group and Solo exhibitions and is collected privately. In 2019 she completed an Artist in Residency with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and the York Region Art Council at the Kortright Center. DESCRIPTION:Join TBG Horticulturalist as she shares hummingbird-friendly gardening tips!What is that little jewel hovering around my fuchsias? A hummingbird?! How do I get more? How do I keep them humming\, and coming\, and well fed? Do they really eat spiders? Should I be feeding them spiders? I don’t want to do that\, what can I plant to keep them powered? Join Jess Conley\, TBG Horticulturist\, as she takes you through all of these questions and more\, to help keep you and your hummingbirds friends happy and flappy. We’ll explore if hummingbird feeders are right for you\, and the best plants (not just red) to bring all the hummingbirds to your yard. Jess will demonstrate creating a hummingbird planter that you can use in your backyard or balcony. The planter will be raffled off to a lucky participant!  Apartment/condo dwellers are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting morning of hummingbird photography!\n\n\nJoin TBG horticulturist and amateur wildlife photographer Sasan Beni\, for a fun-filled morning of hummingbird photography. In this workshop\, you will learn all about the behaviour of hummingbirds\, how to set the scene of your photos with artistic perches and experiment with different techniques to lure the birds where you want them. We will try out these techniques in an outdoor studio set up in the Garden. \nThis is a hands-on photography workshop\, please bring a camera. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Connect with nature and join us for a guided forest therapy walk!Rekindle your relationship with nature this Summer through a guided outdoor Forest Bathing walk with certified Forest Therapy guide Laura Bincik. At a slow pace and in community with other participants and the environment\, you will be guided by a series of invitations throughout the experience to awaken your senses and intentionally connect with nature in the present moment. We will gather briefly indoors to prepare for the walk and consider the origin of Forest Bathing as well as some of the benefits of the practice. When we venture into the Toronto Botanical Gardens and surrounding ravine\, we will cover a loop of approx.1.5 Km on paved pathways\, lawns and bare ground\, at times encountering uneven terrain\, inclines and declines. We will be strolling\, standing and sitting (if you wish to). Your comfort and safety are most important! As this program occurs rain or shine\, please dress for the weather and wear sturdy\, closed-toed footwear. Long pants and shirt sleeves will help to protect against insect bites. You may wish to bring a water bottle\, sunhat/glasses\, walking poles and/or a folding stool or sitting/kneeling pad. As the walk ends\, we will gather and partake in a seasonal tea\, snacks and taste honey harvested at Toronto Botanical Garden. This program runs rain or shine. In the case of severe or dangerous weather\, you will be informed by TBG if program is cancelled as early as possible.  Washrooms are available onsite. The program is suited for adults 18+. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beautiful chorus of birdsong at the start of the day!Early in the day\, the air is calm and other sounds are low. Join us to revel in an incredible natural symphony as birds pass overhead on their southern migration south. Sasan Beni\, TBG Seasonal Horticulturist\, and avid birder\, will be on hand to help identify the birds we hear and see. Bring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat. Please Note: As with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. Please be patient and considerate. The tour will not be rescheduled due to lack bird sightings. The tour will only be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Her art generally consists of bright\, bold colours and forms. Mostly working with florals\, Linda occasionally completes a fun landscape. Her paintings’ subject matter are usually taken from her own photography images. Linda loves to share her enjoyment in the lively and vibrant world of botanical essences. Her art can be seen in both group exhibits and separate venues. She is a member of the Beach Guild of Fine Art\, the Riverdale Art Group and former member of Botanical Artists of Canada. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a transformative experience\, where you’ll find inner peace and relaxation.Toronto Botanical Garden has partnered with Mira Kopanarov\, a Storyteller and Artist\, to offer a six-month breathwork experience program for creative transformation. Each class is independent and tailored towards gradual body and mind care. You can register for as many or as few as you like. The Guided Breathwork Experience program at the Toronto Botanical Garden uniquely combines breath with storytelling\, movement\, and nature to create a healthy and creative journey into the new year. Each class’ focus will be different\, progressively allowing your awareness and body to be healthier and energized. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of creating a customized botanical printed notebook!Using the process of Linocut\, you’ll be creating a custom printed Japanese notebook. From designing your image\, through to carving and printing\, our instructor will assist and demonstrate techniques. By the end of the workshop you’ll have 2 unique botanical themed notebooks\, plus new printmaking skills. Please bring your own sketches\, drawings or photos for inspiration and reference. Beginners welcome. All materials provided. Making art can be messy\, please wear old clothes or an apron. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. Since then\, she has been passionately mastering this technique and has created many artworks drawing inspiration from nature\, music and travel. She cuts the paper strips in different widths to add depth and dimension to her creations. She loves to play with the colours and experiment with the quilling techniques to create her own distinctive style. Deepa believes that anyone can learn this art form\, regardless of their age or skill level and she hosts many workshops to spread the joy of quilling. SUMMARY:Floral Design Program: Classic Design Fundamentals 1
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of classic floral design including four styles – a water-viewing design\, a centrepiece\, a crescent\, and a mass design.This course is the prerequisite to all other courses in TBG’s Floral Design Certificate program. Learn the fundamentals such as how to select and condition flowers\, how to use floral design equipment and how to achieve different types of designs. Course fees do not include flowers or supplies. Students are encouraged to find a local flower shop or grocery store to purchase their flowers. A materials list will be e-mailed prior to the start of each class.
