DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of Cyanotype Printmaking!\n\n\nPlease join us for a delightful afternoon of Cyanotype Printmaking! In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll create a small collection of original Cyanotype prints inspired from plants at Toronto Botanical Garden. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. \nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. \nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. This session welcomes everyone who resonates with these themes.  \n\n\n\nMaking Trails and Ravines Safer and More Inclusive through Community-Engaged ResearchSophie Callahan\, The Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT) at Clean Air Partnership Green spaces like Toronto’s multi-use trail and ravine system are essential to communities’ health and well-being. But how do we know who actually uses and benefits from these spaces? And how can we identify and prioritize changes to trails’ design\, amenities\, and programming that can best serve the needs of the community? In our recent “Understanding Access to Toronto’s Parks and Multiuse Trails” study\, we sought to answer these questions with community members through trail intercept surveys\, group walk audits\, and focus groups. In this workshop session\, we’ll share some of the key practical insights from our experiences and reflect with participants on ways local groups can benefit from similar participatory approaches to understanding and responding to their community’s needs.  \n\n\n\nNordheimer Ravine: An Exemplary Process of Revitalization and Citizen EngagementSusan Aaron\, University of Toronto The Nordheimer Ravine has undergone a unique and yet exemplary process of nature revitalization. It is in the Don River watershed. The Castle Frank brook runs from the Oak Ridge Moraine to the Don\, and when buried in pipes\, the water that fed it pooled\, preventing a grass park in some areas. In the late 1990s\, three wetlands were created to hold water. This presentation will speak to the original design of wetlands and the 20 years of work by community and professional city Forestry staff to create an environmentally significant area. My additional project is to expand that revitalization onto surrounding private slopes and nearby public parks. SUMMARY:Kokedama: Japanese Moss Ball Design
DESCRIPTION:You’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama.\n\n\n‘Moss ball bonsai\,’ Kokedama is the Japanese art of planting without pots. A ball of soil or clay is covered with moss is used to support the plant’s roots. Considered to be cheerful\, peaceful\, and calm\, this charming design style began in the seventeen century. Perfect in small spaces\, Kokedama are often presented on decorative plates\, wood branches\, or stone but they can also be suspended in the air with the help of a cord. In this workshop you’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss (an often ignored member of the plant kingdom)\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama. \nAll materials required will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Design and create a beautiful fall-themed glass tea-light holder!\n\n\nImagine a small grove of trees or a crop of mushrooms with a small tealight inside. Under the guidance of Fused Glass Artist Millean Kung\, you will be able to create two (2) Fused Glass Tealight Holders. During the class you will learn about fused glass\, compatibility\, how to cut glass\, safety\, and the firing of glass. DESCRIPTION:Connect with nature and join us for a guided forest therapy walk!\n\n\nRekindle your relationship with nature this Fall through a guided outdoor Forest Bathing walk with certified Forest Therapy guide Laura Bincik. At a slow pace and in community with other participants and the environment\, you will be guided by a series of invitations throughout the experience to awaken your senses and intentionally connect with nature in the present moment. \nWe will gather briefly indoors to prepare for the walk and consider the origin of Forest Bathing as well as some of the benefits of the practice. When we venture into the Toronto Botanical Gardens and surrounding ravine\, we will cover a loop of approx.1.5 Km on paved pathways\, lawns and bare ground\, at times encountering uneven terrain\, inclines and declines. We will be strolling\, standing and sitting (if you wish to). Your comfort and safety are most important! As this program occurs rain or shine\, please dress for the weather and wear sturdy\, closed-toed footwear. Long pants and shirt sleeves will help to protect against insect bites. You may wish to bring a water bottle\, sunhat/glasses\, walking poles and/or a folding stool or sitting/kneeling pad. \nAs the walk ends\, we will gather and partake in a seasonal tea\, snacks and taste honey harvested at Toronto Botanical Garden. \nThis program runs rain or shine. In the case of severe or dangerous weather\, you will be informed by TBG if program is cancelled as early as possible. \nWashrooms are available onsite. \nThe program is suited for adults 18+. SUMMARY:Introduction to Leatherwork and Beadwork Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting introductory workshop on beading and leatherwork with 2 Thunderbirds: Skye & Lee!During this workshop\, participants will learn to make their own beaded medicine pouch. Participants will learn flat stitch beadwork and have access to traditional materials\, including moose and deer leather.  Traditional teachings are woven throughout the workshop lesson. Some examples include beading as medicine\, sacred medicines\, and how to harvest in accordance with Anish ways. All materials are provided. Saturday\, August 9 from 10:00 AM- 2:00 PM. There will be a 30-minute break for lunch. We recommend bringing a lunch or stopping by the Dandelion Cafe on site. Lee learned the art of beading as a child from a healer in the Grand River community. Lee loves to teach the art of leatherwork and beadwork because it is a form of Medicine to her\, allowing her to continue to pass on her knowledge and ensure the next generation has the chance to access traditional ways of knowing and being. Lee holds a B.A. in paralegal studies. Lee published an article through Humber College in 2019 titled “Education and Indigenous Access to Justice.” Lee’s Indigenous Boutique began operations in 2020 after the Pandemic shut down the Pow Wow Trail\, leaving the family business and launching an exclusive beadwork & medicine website. In 2022\, Lee expanded her business and now offers catering for private events. The limited menu showcases traditional compote and post-colonial indigenous foods. SUMMARY:Botanical Mixed Media Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore your creativity with mixed media painting!Join artist Nancy Falconi on a creative journey as she guides you through the photo transfer process\, transforming a photograph from the Toronto Botanical Garden into a mixed media painting! Get ready to master the 3 steps to a successful photo transfer. Using graphite you will depict the intricacy and details in the transferred botanical photograph\, focusing on defining shadows and shapes. Drawing inspiration from master graphite artists\, we will delve into five drawing techniques tailored for graphite work. Following this\, participants will complete the painting with acrylic paint. By the end of the class\, you will acquire the ability to transform photographic images by enhancing them with acrylic paint and graphite\, resulting in photographic paintings. The techniques acquired in this session will enable you to produce mixed media paintings based on your botanical photographs. No prior experience or drawing background required. All materials provided. You will depart with an 8×10 mixed media painting on a wooden panel ready for display. Saturday\, July 26 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. There will be a 30-minute break for lunch. It was a reunion with a long lost love that dates back to the photos she would take of her three younger sisters as a child. Her lifestyle photographs have graced the pages of various publications like Entrepreneur Magazine\, Organic Gardening\, Yoga Journal\, Today’s Parent and Canadian Living. As a contributing photographer for Getty Images since 2006 her work has been published in many International Commercial print campaigns. As her career progressed Nancy’s focus shifted to photographing the natural world and its’ creatures\, highlighting the interconnectedness of all living beings. It also shifted to exploring different art forms at institutions like the Toronto School of Art and R & F in New York. Nancy integrated her photographic skills with painting mediums to craft unique mixed media artworks. Her work has been exhibited in Galleries\, Art Fairs\, Group and Solo exhibitions and is collected privately. In 2019 she completed an Artist in Residency with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and the York Region Art Council at the Kortright Center. DESCRIPTION:Join TBG Horticulturalist as she shares hummingbird-friendly gardening tips!What is that little jewel hovering around my fuchsias? A hummingbird?! How do I get more? How do I keep them humming\, and coming\, and well fed? Do they really eat spiders? Should I be feeding them spiders? I don’t want to do that\, what can I plant to keep them powered? Join Jess Conley\, TBG Horticulturist\, as she takes you through all of these questions and more\, to help keep you and your hummingbirds friends happy and flappy. We’ll explore if hummingbird feeders are right for you\, and the best plants (not just red) to bring all the hummingbirds to your yard. Jess will demonstrate creating a hummingbird planter that you can use in your backyard or balcony. The planter will be raffled off to a lucky participant!  Apartment/condo dwellers are welcome. Hummingbirds fly high and love to visit these urban environments too! DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting morning of hummingbird photography!\n\n\nJoin TBG horticulturist and amateur wildlife photographer Sasan Beni\, for a fun-filled morning of hummingbird photography. In this workshop\, you will learn all about the behaviour of hummingbirds\, how to set the scene of your photos with artistic perches and experiment with different techniques to lure the birds where you want them. We will try out these techniques in an outdoor studio set up in the Garden. \nThis is a hands-on photography workshop\, please bring a camera. We recommend digital cameras (DSLRs)\, but phones will work. \nPlease Note: The spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the instructor. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Connect with nature and join us for a guided forest therapy walk!Rekindle your relationship with nature this Summer through a guided outdoor Forest Bathing walk with certified Forest Therapy guide Laura Bincik. At a slow pace and in community with other participants and the environment\, you will be guided by a series of invitations throughout the experience to awaken your senses and intentionally connect with nature in the present moment. We will gather briefly indoors to prepare for the walk and consider the origin of Forest Bathing as well as some of the benefits of the practice. When we venture into the Toronto Botanical Gardens and surrounding ravine\, we will cover a loop of approx.1.5 Km on paved pathways\, lawns and bare ground\, at times encountering uneven terrain\, inclines and declines. We will be strolling\, standing and sitting (if you wish to). Your comfort and safety are most important! As this program occurs rain or shine\, please dress for the weather and wear sturdy\, closed-toed footwear. Long pants and shirt sleeves will help to protect against insect bites. You may wish to bring a water bottle\, sunhat/glasses\, walking poles and/or a folding stool or sitting/kneeling pad. As the walk ends\, we will gather and partake in a seasonal tea\, snacks and taste honey harvested at Toronto Botanical Garden. This program runs rain or shine. In the case of severe or dangerous weather\, you will be informed by TBG if program is cancelled as early as possible.  Washrooms are available onsite. The program is suited for adults 18+. All participants must sign a liability waiver at the start of the program. Friday\, July 11 from 9:30-11:30 AM. In 2009\, Sifu David received his Usui Reiki master certification from the Naturopathic School of Medicine in Toronto.
