DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of creating a customized botanical printed notebook! Using the process of Linocut\, you’ll create a custom-printed Japanese notebook. From designing your image\, through to carving and printing\, our instructor will assist and demonstrate techniques. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature-focused art programs and workshops. \nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. \nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine-inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Connect with nature and join us for a guided forest therapy walk!\n\n\nDiscover the beauty of nature in winter through a guided outdoor Forest Bathing walk with certified Forest Therapy guide Laura Bincik. At a slow pace and in community with other participants and the environment\, you will be guided by a series of invitations throughout the experience to awaken your senses and intentionally connect with nature in the present moment. \nWe will gather briefly indoors to prepare for the walk and consider the origin of Forest Bathing as well as some of the benefits of the practice. When we venture into the Toronto Botanical Gardens and surrounding ravine\, we will cover a loop of approx.1.5 Km on paved pathways\, flat and bare ground\, at times encountering uneven terrain\, inclines and declines. It may be slippery! We will be strolling\, standing and sitting (if you wish to). Your comfort and safety are most important! As this is an outdoor winter program at a slow pace\, please ‘over’ dress for the weather and wear thermal socks and under layers\, a sweater\, a winter jacket\, winter pants and sturdy winter boots. Mittens\, a scarf and a winter hat are a must! You may wish to bring a day pack\, water bottle\, sunglasses\, walking poles and/or a folding stool or sitting/kneeling pad. \nAs the walk ends\, we will gather and partake in a seasonal tea\, snacks and taste honey harvested at Toronto Botanical Garden. \nThis outdoor program runs in all conditions. In the case of severe or dangerous weather\, you will be informed by TBG if program is cancelled as early as possible. \nWashrooms are available onsite. \nThe program is suited for adults 18+. Laura feels a connection to the land and the wonder of being in nature from countless hours spent exploring Toronto ravines in all seasons. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season with a fun-filled holiday ornament workshop!\n\n\nCelebrate the spirit of the season by crafting unique\, nature-inspired holiday ornaments! In this cozy and creative two-hour workshop\, participants will learn how to transfer full-colour images onto natural wood slices using a simple and effective image transfer technique. \nThe session begins with preparing the wood surfaces and exploring the basics of photo transfer. Students can select from a curated collection of images to bring their ornaments to life. After completing the transfer\, participants will personalize their designs with optional metallic accents or hand-painted details to add sparkle and individuality. \nBy the end of the workshop\, each participant will create 2-3 handcrafted ornaments\, perfect for decorating a holiday tree\, gifting to loved ones\, or treasuring as keepsakes for years to come. \nNo prior art experience is necessary. It was a reunion with a long lost love that dates back to the photos she would take of her three younger sisters as a child. Her lifestyle photographs have graced the pages of various publications like Entrepreneur Magazine\, Organic Gardening\, Yoga Journal\, Today’s Parent and Canadian Living. As a contributing photographer for Getty Images since 2006 her work has been published in many International Commercial print campaigns. As her career progressed Nancy’s focus shifted to photographing the natural world and its’ creatures\, highlighting the interconnectedness of all living beings. It also shifted to exploring different art forms at institutions like the Toronto School of Art and R & F in New York. Nancy integrated her photographic skills with painting mediums to craft unique mixed media artworks. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. \nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. \nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. But how do we know who actually uses and benefits from these spaces? And how can we identify and prioritize changes to trails’ design\, amenities\, and programming that can best serve the needs of the community? In our recent “Understanding Access to Toronto’s Parks and Multiuse Trails” study\, we sought to answer these questions with community members through trail intercept surveys\, group walk audits\, and focus groups. In this workshop session\, we’ll share some of the key practical insights from our experiences and reflect with participants on ways local groups can benefit from similar participatory approaches to understanding and responding to their community’s needs.  \n\n\n\nNordheimer Ravine: An Exemplary Process of Revitalization and Citizen EngagementSusan Aaron\, University of Toronto The Nordheimer Ravine has undergone a unique and yet exemplary process of nature revitalization. It is in the Don River watershed. The Castle Frank brook runs from the Oak Ridge Moraine to the Don\, and when buried in pipes\, the water that fed it pooled\, preventing a grass park in some areas. In the late 1990s\, three wetlands were created to hold water. This presentation will speak to the original design of wetlands and the 20 years of work by community and professional city Forestry staff to create an environmentally significant area. My additional project is to expand that revitalization onto surrounding private slopes and nearby public parks. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of fall leaf printmaking!\n\n\nPlease join us for a delightful afternoon of printmaking! Learn how to create original Linocut prints using native tree leaves found at Toronto Botanical Garden. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. \nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. \nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. DESCRIPTION:You’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama.\n\n\n‘Moss ball bonsai\,’ Kokedama is the Japanese art of planting without pots. A ball of soil or clay is covered with moss is used to support the plant’s roots. Considered to be cheerful\, peaceful\, and calm\, this charming design style began in the seventeen century. Perfect in small spaces\, Kokedama are often presented on decorative plates\, wood branches\, or stone but they can also be suspended in the air with the help of a cord. In this workshop you’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss (an often ignored member of the plant kingdom)\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama. \nAll materials required will be provided. Under the guidance of Fused Glass Artist Millean Kung\, you will be able to create two (2) Fused Glass Tealight Holders. During the class you will learn about fused glass\, compatibility\, how to cut glass\, safety\, and the firing of glass. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of classic floral design including four styles – a water-viewing design\, a centrepiece\, a crescent\, and a mass design.\n\n\nThis course is the prerequisite to all other courses in TBG’s Floral Design Certificate program. Learn the fundamentals such as how to select and condition flowers\, how to use floral design equipment and how to achieve different types of designs. \nCourse fees do not include flowers or supplies. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Connect with nature and join us for a guided forest therapy walk!\n\n\nRekindle your relationship with nature this Fall through a guided outdoor Forest Bathing walk with certified Forest Therapy guide Laura Bincik. At a slow pace and in community with other participants and the environment\, you will be guided by a series of invitations throughout the experience to awaken your senses and intentionally connect with nature in the present moment. \nWe will gather briefly indoors to prepare for the walk and consider the origin of Forest Bathing as well as some of the benefits of the practice. When we venture into the Toronto Botanical Gardens and surrounding ravine\, we will cover a loop of approx.1.5 Km on paved pathways\, lawns and bare ground\, at times encountering uneven terrain\, inclines and declines. We will be strolling\, standing and sitting (if you wish to). Your comfort and safety are most important! As this program occurs rain or shine\, please dress for the weather and wear sturdy\, closed-toed footwear. Long pants and shirt sleeves will help to protect against insect bites. You may wish to bring a water bottle\, sunhat/glasses\, walking poles and/or a folding stool or sitting/kneeling pad. \nAs the walk ends\, we will gather and partake in a seasonal tea\, snacks and taste honey harvested at Toronto Botanical Garden. \nThis program runs rain or shine. In the case of severe or dangerous weather\, you will be informed by TBG if program is cancelled as early as possible. \nWashrooms are available onsite. \nThe program is suited for adults 18+. DESCRIPTION:Join us and learn the art of manipulating foliage!Manipulating foliage is one of the most important techniques in floral design and indispensable in modern\, contemporary\, and abstract work. Manipulating foliage in a design can create rhythm\, interest\, impact\, and abstraction. In this hands-on course learn how to use techniques like rolling\, plaiting\, braiding\, and boondoggling on leaves such as aspidistra\, flax\, and palm. All foliage plant material is provided for this class. A $100 course fee for the foliage material will be paid directly to your instructor.
