Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. \nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. \nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. DESCRIPTION:Design and create a beautiful glass tea-light holder! Imagine a small grove of trees or a crop of mushrooms with a small tealight inside. Under the guidance of Fused Glass Artist Millean Kung\, you will be able to create two (2) Fused Glass Tealight Holders. During the class you will learn about fused glass\, compatibility\, how to cut glass\, safety\, and the firing of glass. All material and tools are included in this course and Beginners are welcome. Join us to revel in an incredible natural symphony as birds pass overhead on their southern migration south. Sasan Beni\, TBG Seasonal Horticulturist\, and avid birder\, will be on hand to help identify the birds we hear and see.\n \nBring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat.\n \nPlease Note: As with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. Moving through the Toronto Botanical Garden and Edwards Gardens\, participants will observe how formal features like memorial benches and wedding spaces intersect with informal practices such as inscriptions\, photography\, and personal rituals.\n \nDrawing on ethnographic research\, this walk invites participants to reflect on how people leave traces of themselves in public space and how these spaces quietly hold stories of connection\, loss\, and belonging. Published by Canada’s Firefly Books\, the book takes a four-season look at the woody plants in the 205-acre cemetery\, an accredited arboretum with one of the largest tree collections in Canada. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Mount Pleasant Cemetery and the 200th anniversary of Mount Pleasant Group\, which had its origins in Potter’s Field in what is now Toronto’s Yorkville. Janet will share images of some of her favourite trees and shrubs\, followed by a book sale and signing.\n \nFriday\, May 1\, 2 to 4 p.m.\nFree to attend. SUMMARY:Upcycled Fabric Printmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of linocut printmaking on upcycled fabric! \nBreathe new life into your old fabrics! Bring your old cotton fabrics (t-shirts\, tote bags\, etc.) and learn how to create and print original Linocut images onto them. Please bring reference photos\, designs and sketches for inspiration; we’ll be carving a 4 x 6 inch lino block\, so your image will need to fit those dimensions. \nA few tips on what type of fabric to bring:\n \n\n100% cotton is best; avoid any synthetic fibres as the ink will not bond properly.\nA smooth\, fine woven fabric is preferable to coarse woven fabric.\n\nWe’ll be using oil-based inks that are water washable. This eliminates the use of cleaning solvents\, however\, the ink still has a mild scent of Linseed oil.\n \nOil based ink takes about a week to dry. We will provide boxes for you to pin your fabric\, so it can be carried safely to your car. If you travel by TTC\, leave your fabrics with us and pick them up at a later date once they’re dry.\n \nSaturday\, April 25\, 1 to 4 p.m.\nPublic $75\, TBG Members $65 (plus applicable taxes and fees)\nAbout Alan Li\nArtist and conservationist Alan Li uses pencils\, ink and paint to document the wonders of the natural world. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops.\nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation.\nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Join paper artist Nancy Lalicon for the “Paper to Petal: Cherry Blossoms Workshop” to create your own bouquet of flowers which will last much\, much longer. In this 4-hour session\, participants will learn to create lifelike Cherry Blossoms in two shades of pink. Nancy will guide you through constructing the flowers using precut petals and leaf templates. You will have the opportunity to make as many branches as you wish. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature-focused art programs and workshops. \nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. \nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine-inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. DESCRIPTION:Join TBG Seasonal Horticulturist Beni to kick off the 2026 Great Backyard Bird Count. Learn how to identify common winter birds and how to contribute to citizen science through this fun\, beginner-friendly tour of the ravine and surrounding gardens. Beni will share his extensive bird knowledge\, identification\, and photography tips as you explore the ravine and surrounding areas. \nBring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat. \nFriday\, February 13\, 10 to 11:30 a.m.Public $22\, Members $20 (plus applicable taxes and fees) \nPlease note: As with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. His home is a revolving door of tropical plants. Beni is also passionate about birdwatching and wildlife photography.
