A ball of soil or clay is covered with moss is used to support the plant’s roots. Considered to be cheerful\, peaceful\, and calm\, this charming design style began in the seventeen century. Perfect in small spaces\, Kokedama are often presented on decorative plates\, wood branches\, or stone but they can also be suspended in the air with the help of a cord. In this workshop you’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss (an often ignored member of the plant kingdom)\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama. \n\n\n\nAll materials required will be provided. After a rainfall have you ever wondered where all the rain disappears to? This talk for the curious explores Toronto’s water\, sewage\, and stormwater infrastructure in a clear and engaging manner. Using maps\, we’ll investigate where TBG’s water\, sewage and stormwater comes from or goes to! DESCRIPTION:A unique forest bathing experience connecting with the water and Wilket Creek ravine.\n \nDo you have a special spot by the water that brings you joy?\n\n\nJoin us at the Toronto Botanical Garden to take part in a unique forest bathing experience to connect with the element of water and how it can make us happier\, calmer\, and healthier. As part of Ravine Days\, we invite you to explore Wilket Creek and the Don Valley Ravine with our Certified Forest Therapy Guide\, Emma Rooney. This slow guided walk is a chance to stretch your sensory awareness and build a deeper relationship with the waters of life. \nForest bathing—taking in the forest atmosphere—is a growing global practice that originated in Japan in the 1980s to address burnout caused by the technological boom. This Ravine Days event will provide an introduction to forest bathing and a supportive environment to try it. While we will spend most of our time near the water\, no bathing suits are required to immerse yourself in the experience. This session does not involve getting into the water\, and no prior experience with forest bathing is required. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a small bowl to fill with a tiny bit of water to reflect upon during the session. We’ll end our time together with a moment of water gratitude and a sip of drinking water. While studying Environmental Landscape Management at Seneca College in King City\, he took up birdwatching–a hobby that quickly evolved into a passion for wildlife photography. \n\n\n\nBefore joining the TBG in 2020 as a Seasonal Horticulturist\, Beni worked as a seasonal gardener at the Toronto Zoo. In the last 3 years\, he has led over 20 guided birdwatching walks at TBG and Wilket Creek Ravine and written several articles for Trellis magazine about urban wildlife\, which include his own photographs. Beni says\, “I’ve always considered myself lucky in my encounters with wildlife\, but my greatest luck comes from my profession.” \n\n\n\nPlease Note: As with any wildlife event\, though highly unlikely for this event\, the spotting of birds is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the TBG. SUMMARY:"IAM" Outdoor Installation + Experience by Radha Chaddah
DESCRIPTION:IAM is a performance installation with a stage made entirely of projected imagery cast onto trees and grass in Edwards Gardens. Audience members will be seated or can stand on grass at the edge of the stage\, as the dancers play amidst vividly coloured\, animated 3D imagery. The immersive visuals take the viewer into a vastly magnified microscopic realm\, as the projected imagery was produced and photographed in laboratories at the University of Toronto. This represents a symbolic re-framing of our relationship to the natural world\, reminding us that we are only a small part of the evolutionary narrative of life on earth. Following the live performance\, the audience is invited to experience the stage as a light sculpture installation. You’ll have a chance to explore the space and discover the change of perspective in the projected scenography while becoming enveloped in the intricate light patterns of molecules\, bodily tissues\, and energies. \nWednesday\, September 27\, 2023 \n7:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Artist Talk + Live Performance Join us as we sit down for a behind-the-scenes presentation by Toronto-based visual artist and scientist\, Radha Chaddah who will explain her work and the process of creating “IAM” followed by the live outdoor performance and immersive experience in Edwards Gardens.$5 Public; Free for TBG Members \nDoors open at 7 p.m. \n9:30 to 10:30 p.m. – FREE Live Performance The second performance of “IAM” is for those who wish to experience the performance only without the pre-show talk. DESCRIPTION:Learn all about soil: what it’s made of and how to make it better!\n \nSoil\, the biologically active repository of nutrients that supports and grows many plants\, is comprised of organic matter\, inorganic matter\, air\, and water. Different combinations of these ‘ingredients’ make for different habitats\, in which different plants thrive. SUMMARY:Birch Glass Plate—Painted Glass Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Birch\, one of Canada’s most beautiful trees\, is characterized by papery\, peeling trunks with distinct horizontal banding. In this session\, participants will learn to create a glass plate with a painted birchbark design. Through the process\, participants will understand the process of creating paint decorated fused glass – this includes safety\, types of glass\, co-efficiencies of glass\, and the firing of their pieces. These make the most darling presents! \nSuitable for absolute beginners. Materials included. Pieces are fired off-site and will be ready for pick up at TBG 2-3 weeks after the workshop. For safety purposes\, wear closed-toed shoes\, no loose sleeves/scarves\, no jewelry\, and hair must be tied back. \nNote: Samples of birch glass plates are in TBG’s Garden Shop and other pieces are available for purchase! \nSunday\, September 17\, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  \nRegistration: Public $125\, Members $115 (plus applicable taxes and fees) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Millean Kung \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Toronto\, Millean discovered Pottery and Glass Art more than 10 years ago. Currently\, she is a member of the Potter’s Studios in Scarborough and Glasstronomy Studios in Markham. Since retiring from education\, Millean has devoted her time to her Pottery and Glass Art. She is the sole proprietor of her business\, “1 in a Millean”\, and participates in a number of Arts and Crafts Shows. Millean is a member and a volunteer at the Toronto Botanical Garden. DESCRIPTION:For students with previous Linocut experience\, this course offers advanced techniques to further your growth as a printmaker. Linocut Reduction printing is a process that enables the creation of multi-colour prints from a single block of Lino. Geophytes are plants that have organs growing below the soil which store energy and nutrients to help the future plant grow the material above the soil. Her earliest memories of gardening include anxiously watching the growth of radishes and annual flowers in her own little plot in the back garden. \n\n\n\nWhen Joanna moved from the UK to Toronto\, she purchased a window box for the apartment balcony\, several houseplants and of course. a book about gardening. Moving to a house offered more gardening possibilities.
