DESCRIPTION:‘Moss ball bonsai\,’ Kokedama is the Japanese art of planting without pots. A ball of soil or clay is covered with moss is used to support the plant’s roots. Considered to be cheerful\, peaceful\, and calm\, this charming design style began in the seventeen century. Perfect in small spaces\, Kokedama are often presented on decorative plates\, wood branches\, or stone but they can also be suspended in the air with the help of a cord. In this workshop\, you’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss (an often ignored member of the plant kingdom)\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama. An unusual and low-maintenance hostess or holiday present! \n\n\n\nAll materials required will be provided to create two kokedama balls per participant. SUMMARY:Floral Fused Glass Tea Light Holder Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Design and create a beautiful floral glass tea-light holder!\n \nWhat could be cozier than a little candlelight on a dark night? In this session\, participants will learn to create two glass tea light holders. Fused glass refers to any piece of glass formed after heating two or more pieces of glass together in a kiln. Through the process\, participants will understand the process of creating fused glass – this includes safety\, types of glass\, co-efficiencies of glass\, and the firing of their pieces. Perfect for holiday gifting!\n \nSuitable for absolute beginners. Materials included. Pieces will be ready for pick up at TBG 2-3 weeks after the workshop. For safety purposes\, wear closed-toed shoes\, no loose sleeves/scarves\, no jewellery\, and hair must be tied back.\n \nNote: Samples of the Floral Glass Tea Light Holders are in the TBG Garden Shop and other glass pieces are available for purchase!\n \nSaturday\, November 18\, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\n \nRegistration: Public $125\, Members $115 (plus applicable taxes and fees)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Millean Kung \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Toronto\, Millean discovered Pottery and Glass Art more than 10 years ago. Currently\, she is a member of the Potter’s Studios in Scarborough and Glasstronomy Studios in Markham. Since retiring from education\, Millean has devoted her time to her Pottery and Glass Art. She is the sole proprietor of her business\, “1 in a Millean”\, and participates in a number of Arts and Crafts Shows. Millean is a member and a volunteer at the Toronto Botanical Garden. Exploring the trials and tribulations\, successes and failures of creating a great garden on dry sand. From the un-watered Xeric garden to the increasing amounts of dry shade\, a vast array of perennials\, shrubs\, and annuals have been successfully cultivated under these tough conditions. Have you ever turned on the tap and considered how exactly the water got to you? Have you ever flushed the toilet and thought\, where it is all going? After a rainfall have you ever wondered where all the rain disappears to? This talk for the curious explores Toronto’s water\, sewage\, and stormwater infrastructure in a clear and engaging manner. Using maps\, we’ll investigate where TBG’s water\, sewage and stormwater comes from or goes to! We will learn about the Leslie elevated water tank\, the Coxwell Sanitary Trunk Sewer\, Wilket Creek\, and more. Don’t miss this opportunity to deepen and foster a stronger connection to place. In graduate school\, she helped develop a costing tool for stormwater management practices such as green roofs\, permeable pavement\, and rainwater harvesting for the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and developed a holistic approach for designing resilient communities. SUMMARY:Harvest Day Festival!
DESCRIPTION:Toronto Botanical Garden welcomes fall with a Harvest Day Festival – a fun-filled day with learning exploring\, activities\, and music! Start the day with Nature Sommelier Jacob Rodenburg then grab a nature passport and head out to help harvest vegetables from our garden\, try out binoculars to spot birds in the ravine\, and even roast a marshmallow! You will receive a stamp for each activity completed. We will end the day with an interactive musical experience with musician and nature educator Pete Moss. Don’t forget to check out on your way out to collect a special prize! \n\n\n\nThe North York Harvest Food Bank will be on-site to collect donations from our garden harvest and we encourage those interested in bringing non-perishable food to add to our contribution! \n\n\n\nThis is a FREE event. Please note registration is not required but we would love to know you are planning to attend! In the event of inclement weather\, events will be held inside. He is an award-winning educator\, qualified teacher with a Master’s in Education\, and has taught in the field of camping and outdoor education for more than 35 years. Jacob teaches environmental education at Trent University and has published many articles on education\, nature and the value of outdoor learning. He is the author of The Book of Nature Connection: 70 Sensory Activities for All Ages and will start the day in the Weston Family Library at 10 a.m. for a family-friendly exploration. \n\n\n\nPete Moss is an acclaimed children’s musician and child psychotherapist candidate who connects people of all ages with the natural world. Drawing inspiration from everyday birds\, plants and weather\, Pete’s playful\, folksy style and sophisticated songwriting have gained him over 20K monthly listeners on Spotify.
