DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn how to create beautiful container gardens using native plants at our fun and hands-on workshop! \n\n\n\nNo garden is too small to support the environment and encourage biodiversity by growing native plants! Join this workshop to learn how create a container of nativeplants for a summer of blooms on your balcony or terrace. You will create a container with 5-6 native plants to take home. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beautiful chorus of birdsong at the start of the day!Early in the day\, the air is calm and other sounds are low. Join us for International Dawn Chorus Day to revel in an incredible natural symphony as birds pass overhead on their southern migration south. Sasan Beni\, TBG Seasonal Horticulturist\, and avid birder\, will be on hand to help identify the birds we hear and see. Bring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat. Please Note: As with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. Please be patient and considerate. The tour will not be rescheduled due to lack bird sightings. The tour will only be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Meet at the TBG main entrance\, just outside the George and Kathy Dembroski Centre for Horticulture. The walk will start promptly at 5:30 a.m.\, arrive early to arrive on time. He graduated with a diploma in Environmental Landscape Management from Seneca College in King City\, worked for the Toronto Zoo as a seasonal gardener\, and joined TBG in 2020 as a seasonal Horticulturalist. His home is a revolving door of tropical plants. Beni is also passionate about birdwatching and wildlife photography. In the last three years he has led many guided birdwatching walks around Toronto and has written several articles for Trellis magazine illustrated with his nature photographs. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to compost with earthworms and create your own natural soil amendment! \n\n\n\nJoin Worm Wrangler to learn about composting with help from earth worms! This is a group program and each registration can accommodate up to 5 participants from a family or group. Each group will take home their own at home composter! \n\n\n\nDuring this interactive session\, the worm wrangler\, AKA Amanda Hunter will introduce you to the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of vermicomposting – a natural\, sustainable method of transforming organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil conditioner. Each family or group will leave this workshop with their own vermicompost bin\, red wiggler worms and the know-how to keep your worms happy and productive. Together\, we’ll set up your worm composting bin; talk about how and when to feed your worms; and how to harvest and use your finished vermicompost in your home or garden. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also delve into the environmental benefits of vermicomposting\, including waste reduction\, soil enrichment\, and fun. This is a great family-friendly hobby\, and children are invited to participate in this hands-on workshop! \n\n\n\nAll materials are included. DESCRIPTION:Three landscapes and what they teach us about our interactions with the natural world. \n\n\n\nThis presentation of photographs\, sketches and drawings created by Architect\, Howard Rideout will reveal three very personal landscapes that he has nurtured for decades. The first is a city garden pruned to perfection\, the second is a large tangled garden created for his parents which has reverted into a semi-natural state and the third is a large wilderness preserve Howard has been imagining since he was a child and which has only recently come into fruition. As a graduate of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture\, and a member of both the Ontario Association of Architects\, and the American Society of Architectural Illustrators he has built a successful design career that spans from residential projects in Ontario to planning university campuses\, waterfront communities as well as numerous luxury hotels and resorts in China. His architectural projects in rural Ontario are highlighted in the book\, “Building Community/Community Building\, The Work of Howard Rideout Architect in Simcoe County”. He has received numerous awards for this work\, with environmental stewardship being a driving force in his design philosophy. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Houseplant Clinic to diagnose and cure all your indoor plants’ ailments! \n\n\n\nAre you noticing yellow\, droopy leaves on your houseplant? Perhaps you’ve also noticed sticky leaves or an infestation of little flies or spiders. Don’t worry – TBG Horticulturalists are here to help! Join us for this in-person houseplant clinic where we will introduce common problems and their remedies and then we’ll help you identify and solve common problems that your tropical indoor plants may be experiencing! \n\n\n\nRemember\, prevention is key when it comes to keeping your houseplants healthy. Avoid overwatering\, provide adequate light and ventilation\, and regularly inspect your plants for any signs of pests or diseases. By identifying and addressing the problems early on\, you can ensure that your tropical indoor plants will thrive. \n\n\n\nImportant: Your plant MUST be brought to TBG in a transparent plastic bags–this ‘portable greenhouse’ will keep your plant safe and keep your plant problems to your own plant. We cannot take the risk that your indoor plant problem becomes ours! Any plant not in a transparent bag will not be admitted. In this program we will introduce some of the most popular vegetable families\, how to nurture them\, protect them from pests and disease\, and when to harvest. Participants will learn key tips for reading seed packets\, about plot and container preparation\, crop rotation\, square foot gardening and companion planting. All of this will help increase bounty while practicing a holistic approach to garden management. A whole new world of tasty and fresh veggies is waiting for you! \nPART 3 – It’s never too late to start your veggie garden \nWednesday\, March 20\, 7 to 9 p.m. \nIf you miss the spring planting season\, don’t despair! There’s still lot’s you can do to have a productive veggie garden well into the fall\, even into the winter. Many veggies\, like kale and spinach\, do better in cool weather. Some can be nursed through cold snaps with a little extra care\, and some are planted in the fall for harvest the following year. In this seminar you will learn about how you can keep on growing as the weather gets cooler and gain a general overview on how to scout and deter pests. Bring a cell phone\, iPad or device that connects to WiFi for the Kahoot quiz! \nPART 4 – Starting Your Veggies From Seed \nWednesday\, March 27\, 7 to 9 p.m. \nWould you like to grow veggies that have been in your family for generations\, maybe even start homesteading\, or perhaps (like many of us) just have fun experimenting with a home garden? From seed sowing to thinning plants\, learning the difference between cotyledons and true leaves\, knowing when to use warming pads or grow-lights … in \nthis seminar you’ll learn everything you didn’t know you needed to know to start growing veggies and herbs from seed! DESCRIPTION:In this follow up to Classic Design Fundamentals 1\, you will enrich your understanding of traditional design. \n\n\n\nJoin Lil Taggart in this follow up to Classic Design Fundamentals I and enrich your understanding of traditional design\, a style which is used in contemporary settings with sophistication. You will gain deeper knowledge of both plant material and design. You will learn colour theory: the importance of colour and how to create different colour harmonies. You will explore the concept and importance of asymmetry in a design and how this can be used to great effect. Discover a new design style each week: a hand tied bouquet\, a vertical line design\, a Hogarth Curve and an asymmetrical mass design. \n\n\n\nPrerequisite: Fundamentals I \n\n\n\nCourse fees do not include flowers or supplies. SUMMARY:Mindfulness\, Meditation\, and Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive experience of mindfulness\, meditation\, and movement. \n\n\n\nWhat is mindfulness\, how can it help you\, and how do you do it? What’s the difference between mindfulness and meditation? How can movement connect these concepts? \n\n\n\nThis session with physiotherapist Susan Czyzo will begin by providing a relatable introduction to mindfulness. We will explore its meaning\, purpose\, and relevance in our modern lives. By breaking down the abstract nature of mindfulness\, participants will gain a clearer understanding of its essence. Meditation is a fundamental aspect of mindfulness. During the workshop\, participants will be guided through various meditation techniques to connect with the present moment. Grounded in her deep knowledge of the body\, physiotherapy and pilates\, Susan will help you connect with and become more deeply aware of your physical body and emotions through gentle movement. To deepen the learning experience\, time will be allocated for group discussion. Participants will have the opportunity to share their insights\, ask questions\, and reflect on their experiences with mindfulness. This communal aspect will foster a sense of belonging and support among participants.
