DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of creating beautiful artwork using botanical ink!In this workshop you’ll learn how to draw a leaf using a classic dip pen with black walnut ink. The warm brown ink evokes the timeless drawings of Renaissance Master Leonardo da Vinci. Our instructor will also explain how to make your own ink. All participants will go home with a dip pen handle\, metal drawing nip and small bottle of black walnut inkmade at Toronto Botanical Garden! No experience is required; just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm! Beginners welcome. Materials are included. You will take home the following: 1 dip pen handle 1 Japanese metal drawing nib 1 sheet of archival quality herbarium paper 1 small bottle of Black Walnut ink made at TBG.  Saturday\, September 14\, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Registration: Public $65\, TBG Members $55 (plus applicable taxes and fees)  About Alan Li Artist and conservationist Alan Li uses pencils\, ink and paint to document the wonders of the natural world. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. DESCRIPTION:You’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama.‘Moss ball bonsai\,’ Kokedama is the Japanese art of planting without pots. A ball of soil or clay is covered with moss is used to support the plant’s roots. Considered to be cheerful\, peaceful\, and calm\, this charming design style began in the seventeen century. Perfect in small spaces\, Kokedama are often presented on decorative plates\, wood branches\, or stone but they can also be suspended in the air with the help of a cord. In this workshop you’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss (an often ignored member of the plant kingdom)\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama. Elizabeth has been featured as an aerialist with Hit & Run Dance Productions\, Disney\, La Rouge Entertainment\, and Zero Gravity Circus. Elizabeth has created and performed many small works and produced four larger productions which premiered at festivals and showcases such as Series 8:08\, Festival of Independent Dance Artists (fFida)\, Atlantic Fringe Festival\, Toronto Fringe Festival 2008 and 2009\, LABCAB Festival and her own productions\, Artists’ Play…a Cabaret!. Elizabeth was trained classically at the Brandon School of Dance\, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet\, and was mentored by Arnold Spohr. After training in Jazz\, Modern and Contemporary at JazzArt\, Grant MacEwan and the Banff Center of Fine Arts\, she graduated from the George Brown Dance Diploma Program where she studied under Ballet Jorgen. Elizabeth has toured England with Parahumans Dance Theatre\, where she facilitated workshops for children in public schools.  Eric Lui Eric is a dancer and acrobat with over twenty five years of experience in a range of practices which include breaking\, contemporary dance\, acrobatic circus arts (hand-to-hand\, Icarian games\, banquine\, teeterboard)\, acro yoga\, contact improv\, and martial arts. He has competed trampolining competitively with Skyriders\, is a two time world champion cheerleader with Team Canada\, and is a part of the Deflying Feets Circus company. After graduate school in philosophy\, Eric transitioned to focusing more on the performing arts. Having started off in acrobatic sports and breakdance\, his early love of tricks has broadened into an interest in more artistic performance that includes more character\, narrative\, and text. His movement practice tends to be collaborative and often mixes movement modalities and influences\, and usually involves partnering or group acrobatics Woody FoxWoody Fox is an Australian circus acrobat trained in Long\, UK. His career in circus began after his in the UnderBelly circus festival that pushed him into various cabarets\, cruise ship shows\, and festivals. His specialties are within duos\, including duo straps and hand to hand. Woody is known for his Golden Buzzer act on Canada’s Got Talent\, performing dup straps and his performance in Cirque Du Demain on duo rope. He is part of the original Bloom! cast\, which debuted in 2022. Tiffany WardenMiranda TempestMiranda Tempest (Tiffany Warden) has been a professional aerialist for over ten years. She founded the public circus program The Flying Arts Collective in 2013 and currently teaches at Artists Play Dance and Circus Centre in downtown Toronto. She's been an in-demand instructor at international events such as Pole Expo in Las Vegas\, Aerial Expo in Iowa\, and Campfire Retreat in Minneapolis. As an artist\, Miranda is the director of Illuminair Entertainment\, a contemporary circus troupe specializing is stylish\, stylized performances. Illuminair has been featured across North America\, including events like the 'Halloween Thriller' party in Fort McMurray\, Alberta; Anime North-Canada's largest anime convention; and the notorious Theatre Bizarre in Detroit. Illuminair has recently finished their first ensemble production\, ‘(Re)Composed’ which was given a Digital Now grant by the Canada Council for the Arts and debuted online in spring 2022. It was remounted in the spring of 2023 with the funding of the Toronto Arts Council. Miranda herself specializes in aerial hoop\, cube\, spanish web\, and chains; as well as duo hoop\, triple trapeze\, and in-air group work in general. Her solo work often uses highly stylized costuming and ranges from showgirl fantasy to nightmare fodder. Heather SimpsonAfter seeing a Spanish web performance at the age of 12\, Heather dreamed of the circus. It took 30 years until she had the opportunity to learn to fly. At the age of 42\, Simpson began to train at the Toronto School of Circus Arts. Her disciplines include Spanish web\, straps\, and aerial chains\, the most painful of circus apparatuses. Since then\, she has been performing in professional shows such as The Chaos Project on aerial rope with Hercinia Arts; various acts with Lunacy Cabaret; and Wonders of Winterland on duo aerial straps with AP Events. Heather has been a primary character in Bloom!\, a magical romp in the garden. At the tender age of 71\, Heather sees no end to her performance career and is a source of awe to the cast around her. Mary-Margaret ScrimgerJoy\, absurdity\, and comedy are constants in Mary-Margaret’s work. She has been a professional aerialist for over ten years\, focusing on static trapeze with skills on other apparatuses such as triple trapeze\, trio cube\, frame\, and spanish web. She has worked with the majority of Toronto circus companies. This includes large successful shows like Cascades for Nuit Blanche\, by Anandam Dancetheatre\, which was ranked #2 best dance piece for 2014; Legends of Horror by Hit and Run Productions; (Re)Composed by Illuminair Entertainment\, a reimagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons using aerial dance; BLOOM!; and the Starlight WishFoundation Gala. Mary-Margaret’s signature act is HENRY\, a googley-eyed alien. WIth a smile on her butt and googley eyes on her feet\, she narrates a story and brings joy to the audience. During the pandemic\, she expanded her repertoire and learned tap dance and mime. In addition to aerial\, Mary-Margaret is a rigger. She teaches the Aerial Arts Foundational Rigging course\, which has increased the safety of rigging in Toronto. She is the head rigger for The Mars Project\, which melds tap dance and aerial. Isadora BelloIsadora Bello is a multidisciplinary circus artist from Brazil. She specializes in dance trapeze and partner acro. Isadora started performing in contemporary dance shows such as “Marias” and “Palavras” in 2018. The following year she performed her dance trapeze act and duo silks in “Suspenso” (Circocan\, 2019). In Canada\, she has been in local productions in Toronto such as BLOOM!\, “The Chaos Project”\, and various corporate events. She studied aerial arts\, flexibility and flying trapeze at Circocan - International School of Circus Arts in Florianopolis and is continuing her formation with ongoing sessions on hand to hand\, dance trapeze and act creation with private coaches in Montreal. She is an adaptable and passionate artist\, who believes different cultures empower the art scenario and bring diversity to the scene. Julija KrisciunasJulija Krisciunas is a 35 year old aerial dancer\, singer\, violinist\, actress\, and visual artist from Toronto. Her love of music led her to double major in Violin and Musical Theatre at the Etobicoke School of the Arts. She continued to pursue music by singing opera at the University of Toronto and then furthering her education in Musical Theatre Performance at St. Lawrence College. Her exploration of circus began in 2015 after completing a tour of a children’s theatre production (Big Kid Entertainment’s Cinderella’s Frog Prince) across Ontario. While she likes to spend most of her time dedicated to practicing\, performing and coaching silks\, Krisciunas has spent time on many different apparatus. Krisciunas’s multifaceted career has led her to participate and lend her many talents to various productions. Some highlights include scaring audiences in Casa Loma’s Legends of Horrors (2019) as an aerialist and performing in Theatre Artaud’s Production of Grab em by the P*ssy at Theatre Passe Muraile (2017) which utilized her acting\, singing\, violin\, juggling and aerial abilities. She has enjoyed many other memorable opportunities to perform in film\, television\, theatre\, and circus companies including AP Events and Hericinia Arts Collective. Her latest act incorporates her talents as an opera singer\, violinist and aerialist all at once in AP Events’ production of Wonders of Winterland. Devonshire CreweDevonshire Crewe is a 24-year-old professional circus performer who graduated from the George Brown College dance program. Crewe has been a student performer for ten years\, professionally performing for four years.Crewe specializes in aerial rope and floor acro\, but they take every opportunity to train and learn a plethora of different apparatus. They have mainly performed for AP Events and Illuminair Entertainment. This includes large events such as (Re)Composed\, a circus ballet of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons; Bloom! (2022 and 2023); and Wonders of Winterland (2022\, 2023\, and 2024). They teach multiple circus and dance classes for Artists’ Play Dance and Circus school. Craig KeelingHailing from Liverpool\, UK\, Craig Keeling’s has been part of shows that have toured through Egypt\, and Switzerland to name a few. He has had various worldwide contracts\, including performing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His skills are diverse\, including acrobatics\, aerials\, acro balance\, and fire performing. New to the Toronto circus community\, he is entering with a splash\, performing for Pride Toronto.

Certified Forest Therapy Guide Emma Rooney will lead you on an outdoor experience to stretch your sensory awareness while deepening your connection with nature. \nForest bathing—taking in the forest atmosphere—is a practice that originated in Japan in the 1980s to address burnout caused by the technological boom. Now\, the practice has inspired people all over the world to connect with nearby nature. You will learn about some of the benefits of forest therapy and be gently guided in the practice. As you walk leisurely through TBG’s grounds\, you’ll receive gentle prompts to help fully engage your senses—seeing\, hearing\, smelling\, tasting\, and touching the nature surrounding you. Immerse yourself in the new season and deepen your relationship with the wild things in our city. \nThe walk ends with a seasonal tea\, where we’ll share some poetry to allow the experience to sink in. Don’t miss your chance to try forest bathing for yourself in a beautiful outdoor setting! Leave with ideas for getting outside at any time of the year and feeling the benefits of being nurtured by nature. \nAccessibility: \nWe’ll begin with an introduction indoors before heading outside. The walk will be at a leisurely pace throughout\, following designated pathways and trails but sometimes covering uneven terrain and steep inclines. The total walk distance over the three hours is approximately 2 km. Dress appropriately for the weather and walking slowly. Wearing layers is recommended. Closed-toed shoes are required. You may wish to bring along your own folding stool\, cushion\, or kneeling pad for sitting on the ground and a walking stick or poles. In the event of severe weather\, alternative arrangements to seek cover will be made by TBG staff. Bathrooms are available on-site. DESCRIPTION:Explore your creativity with mixed media painting!\n\n\nJoin artist Nancy Falconi on a creative journey as she guides you through the photo transfer process\, transforming a photograph from the Toronto Botanical Garden into a mixed media painting! Get ready to master the 3 steps to a successful photo transfer. Using graphite you will depict the intricacy and details in the transferred botanical photograph\, focusing on defining shadows and shapes. Drawing inspiration from master graphite artists\, we will delve into five drawing techniques tailored for graphite work. Following this\, participants will complete the painting with acrylic paint. By the end of the class\, you will acquire the ability to transform photographic images by enhancing them with acrylic paint and graphite\, resulting in photographic paintings. The techniques acquired in this session will enable you to produce mixed media paintings based on your botanical photographs. \nNo prior experience or drawing background required. All materials provided. It also shifted to exploring different art forms at institutions like the Toronto School of Art and R & F in New York. Gila is the first drag performer approved as a vendor and partner for the Toronto District School Board\, and has been the preferred “Drag Queen Story Time” partner of the Toronto Public Library since 2022\, including marching with them in the Toronto Pride Parade to protest censorship in front of 2.4 million spectators. Gila is the recipient of the 2023 Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts Creative Maverick Award for her work in using arts to promote the working people. Gila is also the founder and host of the annual “8 Gays of Channukah Queer Jewish Variety Show\,” the biggest event in the queer Jewish calendar in Toronto\, raising funds for Machane Lev (queer Jewish summer camp) while showcasing queer Jewish artists. DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn how to create beautiful container gardens using native plants at our fun and hands-on workshop! \n\n\n\nNo garden is too small to support the environment and encourage biodiversity by growing native plants! Join this workshop to learn how create a container of nativeplants for a summer of blooms on your balcony or terrace. You will create a container with 5-6 native plants to take home. Your native plant container garden will feed butterflies and caterpillars and provide seeds for the birds. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beautiful chorus of birdsong at the start of the day!Early in the day\, the air is calm and other sounds are low. Join us for International Dawn Chorus Day to revel in an incredible natural symphony as birds pass overhead on their southern migration south. Sasan Beni\, TBG Seasonal Horticulturist\, and avid birder\, will be on hand to help identify the birds we hear and see. Bring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat. Please Note: As with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. Please be patient and considerate. The tour will not be rescheduled due to lack bird sightings. The tour will only be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Meet at the TBG main entrance\, just outside the George and Kathy Dembroski Centre for Horticulture. The walk will start promptly at 5:30 a.m.\, arrive early to arrive on time. He graduated with a diploma in Environmental Landscape Management from Seneca College in King City\, worked for the Toronto Zoo as a seasonal gardener\, and joined TBG in 2020 as a seasonal Horticulturalist. His home is a revolving door of tropical plants. Beni is also passionate about birdwatching and wildlife photography. In the last three years he has led many guided birdwatching walks around Toronto and has written several articles for Trellis magazine illustrated with his nature photographs. SUMMARY:Composting with Earthworms – Build your own Natural Soil Amendment!
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to compost with earthworms and create your own natural soil amendment! \n\n\n\nJoin Worm Wrangler to learn about composting with help from earth worms! This is a group program and each registration can accommodate up to 5 participants from a family or group. Each group will take home their own at home composter! \n\n\n\nDuring this interactive session\, the worm wrangler\, AKA Amanda Hunter will introduce you to the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of vermicomposting – a natural\, sustainable method of transforming organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil conditioner. Each family or group will leave this workshop with their own vermicompost bin\, red wiggler worms and the know-how to keep your worms happy and productive. Together\, we’ll set up your worm composting bin; talk about how and when to feed your worms; and how to harvest and use your finished vermicompost in your home or garden. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also delve into the environmental benefits of vermicomposting\, including waste reduction\, soil enrichment\, and fun. This is a great family-friendly hobby\, and children are invited to participate in this hands-on workshop! \n\n\n\nAll materials are included.
