Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. A recipient of many awards\, Margaret’s accolades include two Canada Blooms’ Founder’s Gold Cups for Best in Show. Margaret has also won Best in Show on three occasions at the provincial triennial show and as a result\, has been chosen to represent Canada in two world shows. It was her greatest honour to exhibit for Canada both in Boston and in India. Margaret is currently a floral design judge accredited by the Garden Clubs of Ontario\, a horticultural judge accredited by the Royal Botanical Gardens and a rose judge accredited by the Canadian Rose Society. Margaret is also a Sogetsu Ikebana teacher and exhibitor. Much lauded for her design acumen by the horticultural community\, she is a past president of the Garden Club of Toronto and is a coordinator of floral design studies at Toronto Botanical Garden. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of classic floral design including four styles – a water-viewing design\, a centrepiece\, a crescent\, and a mass design.This course is the prerequisite to all other courses in TBG’s Floral Design Certificate program. DESCRIPTION:Design and create a beautiful floral glass tea-light holder!What could be cozier than a little candlelight on a dark night? In this session\, participants will learn to create two glass tea light holders. Fused glass refers to any piece of glass formed after heating two or more pieces of glass together in a kiln. Through the process\, participants will understand the process of creating fused glass – this includes safety\, types of glass\, co-efficiencies of glass\, and the firing of their pieces. Perfect for holiday gifting! Suitable for absolute beginners. Materials included. Pieces will be ready for pick up at TBG 2-3 weeks after the workshop. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of fall leaf printmaking!Please join us for a delightful afternoon of printmaking! Learn how to create original Linocut prints using native tree leaves found at Toronto Botanical Garden. By the end of class\, attendees will take home four 8 x 10 prints and four 5×7 prints\, plus the knowledge of how to set up a linocut workspace at home. Please bring an apron or wear old clothing. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. She has been interested in pollinators since an early age due to an insatiable curiosity about nature. After completing a master’s degree in political science at Université du Québec à Montréal\, Adèle specialized in wildlife conservation. Her final research paper explored how wildlife species are put on the international political agenda\, with a focus on bees. As a francophone\, she is also responsible for translating documents for P2C and Bee City Canada. Adèle is excited to work and learn from the amazing team at Pollinator Partnership Canada! About Vicki Wojcik\, Ph.D. Vicki has been working to protect and promote pollinators with Pollinator Partnership since 2011. As Director she oversees P2 Canada’s research and programs\, keeping on top of new and emerging pollinator issues and managing programs that includes pollinator habitat conservation and landscape management assessments; understanding and enhancing agroecosystems or ecosystem service assessments in Canada. Vicki joined the San Francisco team after completing her Ph.D. in Environmental Science\, Policy\, and Management at UC Berkeley. In 2015 she returned home to Toronto with the expansion of P2 Canada. Vicki’s interest in pollinators was sparked during her undergraduate studies at the University of Guelph and has continued ever since. Her graduate research focused on understanding how native bees use gardens and habitats in cities. This focus on pollinators in human-dominated landscapes has continued throughout her career. Vicki’s contributions to pollinator research and conservation include numerous peer reviewed papers\, book chapters\, policy pieces\, planting guides\, and technical manuals. With humor and selective memories\, it chronicles life on a tropical island in the late 1950s and early 60s including adjusting to living in a hot climate\, meeting the neighbours\, family history\, race relations\, tropical plants\, and fruit\, and some of their favourite recipes. Stories and music to be shared with a book sale and signing to follow. Light refreshments to be served. \nLorraine Hunter is a long-time TBG member and volunteer\, past board member\, and current editor of its online magazine\, Trellis. Lorraine worked as a journalist for many years both reporting and editing for various newspapers and magazines including the Nassau Tribune\, Peterborough Examiner\, Ottawa Journal\, Toronto Star\, Hands Magazine\, Plant & Garden\, Canadian Gardening\, and Gardening Life. She and her husband retired sportswriter Rick Matsumoto have two daughters and one granddaughter. They live and garden in Agincourt\, Ontario\, on the northern fringes of Scarborough. \nJanice Hunter Winton is a Chartered Professional Accountant and former registered nurse. She worked for many years in healthcare and higher education\, including at York Finch General Hospital and Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University). Janice is a former board member of the Toronto Botanical Garden and several other not-for-profit organizations. She currently lives on the Toronto Harbourfront with her little dog. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique forest bathing walk on-site with Certified Forest Therapy Guide Emma Rooney!\n\n\nWelcome the autumn season by joining us for a unique forest bathing experience on-site at the Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG). Certified Forest Therapy Guide Emma Rooney will lead you on a guided opportunity to stretch your sensory awareness while deepening your connection with nature. \nForest bathing is a practice that originated in Japan in the 1980s to address burnout caused by the technological boom. Now\, the practice has inspired people all over the world to connect with nearby nature. You will learn about some of the benefits of forest therapy and be guided in the practice. As you walk leisurely through TBG’s grounds\, you’ll receive gentle prompts to help fully engage your senses—seeing\, hearing\, smelling\, tasting\, and touching the nature surrounding you. Immerse yourself in the colours and scents of the season and deepen your relationship with the wild things in our city. \nThe walk ends with a seasonal tea\, where you’ll share some songs and poetry to allow the experience to sink in. Don’t miss your chance to try forest bathing for yourself in a beautiful outdoor setting! \nAccessibility: \nThe walk will be at a slow pace throughout\, following designated pathways and trails but sometimes covering uneven terrain. The total walk distance over the three hours is approximately 2 km. Introductions will be made while participants are standing. You may wish to bring along your own folding stool\, cushion\, or kneeling pad for sitting on the ground and a walking stick or poles. Dress appropriately for the weather and time of day. Closed-toed shoes are required. In the event of severe weather\, alternative arrangements to seek cover will be made by TBG staff. Bathrooms are available on-site. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of creating beautiful artwork using botanical ink!In this workshop you’ll learn how to draw a leaf using a classic dip pen with black walnut ink. The warm brown ink evokes the timeless drawings of Renaissance Master Leonardo da Vinci. Our instructor will also explain how to make your own ink. All participants will go home with a dip pen handle\, metal drawing nip and small bottle of black walnut inkmade at Toronto Botanical Garden! No experience is required; just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm! Beginners welcome. Materials are included. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. DESCRIPTION:You’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama.‘Moss ball bonsai\,’ Kokedama is the Japanese art of planting without pots. A ball of soil or clay is covered with moss is used to support the plant’s roots. Considered to be cheerful\, peaceful\, and calm\, this charming design style began in the seventeen century. Perfect in small spaces\, Kokedama are often presented on decorative plates\, wood branches\, or stone but they can also be suspended in the air with the help of a cord. In this workshop you’ll learn the history of this art\, get an introduction to moss (an often ignored member of the plant kingdom)\, and learn to make your own beautiful kokedama.
