DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informative session about the art and science of pruning!Join renowned garden expert Marion Jarvie for an inspiring talk that explores the transformative art and science of pruning. With decades of experience\, Marion will guide you through the essential techniques that can help you shape your garden with confidence and creativity. Pruning is more than just a practical skill—it’s an opportunity to enhance the beauty and health of your plants. This session will highlight how common-sense approaches to pruning can evolve into an art form that brings joy and satisfaction. Marion will introduce the concept of “transparency\,” a technique for creating open vistas by revealing the beauty beyond small deciduous trees and shrubs\, making your garden feel more expansive and connected to its surroundings. You’ll also discover the benefits of “limbing up” taller trees\, a practice that allows more light and space into your garden while reducing water demand and creating opportunities to grow smaller shrubs and perennials beneath. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a transformative experience\, where you’ll find inner peace and relaxation.Toronto Botanical Garden has partnered with Mira Kopanarov\, a Storyteller and Artist\, to offer a six-month breathwork experience program for creative transformation. Each class is independent and tailored towards gradual body and mind care. You can register for as many or as few as you like. The Guided Breathwork Experience program at the Toronto Botanical Garden uniquely combines breath with storytelling\, movement\, and nature to create a healthy and creative journey into the new year. Each class’ focus will be different\, progressively allowing your awareness and body to be healthier and energized. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day of creating a customized botanical printed notebook!Using the process of Linocut\, you’ll be creating a custom printed Japanese notebook. From designing your image\, through to carving and printing\, our instructor will assist and demonstrate techniques. By the end of the workshop you’ll have 2 unique botanical themed notebooks\, plus new printmaking skills.  Please bring your own sketches\, drawings or photos for inspiration and reference. Each student will receive: 2 Japanese Notebooks 1 Soft Cut Lino Block Black Printmaking Ink  Saturday\, January 25\, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Registration: Public $55\, TBG Members $45 (plus applicable taxes and fees) About Alan Li Artist and conservationist Alan Li uses pencils\, ink and paint to document the wonders of the natural world. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. SUMMARY:Botanical Embroidery: 2-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this beginner-friendly 2-day workshop and create two unique embroidered designs you can add to any piece of clothing!In this beginner two-day workshop you will create two hand embroidered milkweed designs and apply them to an item of clothing to create a uniquely embellished piece. The botanical designs provided in the class are based on embroideries made by Amanda McCavour. On day one of this class\, you will learn how to use water-soluble fabric to transfer the provided designs to a piece of clothing that you bring in or a small piece of linen provided in your class kit. We will start from the very beginning\, stretching our fabric in the embroidery hoop and threading our needles. On day one\, you will learn beginner stitches like running stitch\, split stitch\, seed stitch. French Knot and Fly Stitch. On the second day\, we will begin a new milkweed design and learn more advanced stitches. You will learn how couching stitch can be used with rayon seam binding and yarns provided in the class kit to create dimensional designs. During the class we will slow down and think about how stitching can be used to trace drawn lines and add a special feature to a loved item of clothing. You will learn embroidery skills that you can apply to all kinds of designs and surfaces. At the end of the class you will come away with a one of a kind embroidery that will show off the hand embroidery skills you have learned and some supplies to continue stitching. Please bring in an item of clothing that you would like to stitch onto. I recommend denim or woven items like a jean jacket\, collared shirt\, scarf\, or canvas bag. Wondering if you have the right type of item? Bring in a few options and we can discuss prior to starting the project as a class. You will also have the option of using linen fabric provided to create a patch that can be applied to an item of clothing after the class. All materials other than your item of clothing will be provided in your course kit. About Amanda McCavourAmanda McCavour is a Canadian artist who works with stitch to create large-scale embroidered installations. Her immersive installations speak to themes of memory\, environment\, colour and line. Her lace-like pieces are made by sewing into fabric that dissolves in water. When the fabric is dissolved\, the thread drawings interlock together even without a base. Plants and their ecologies are similarly linked—a biological network is a bound system that sustains a community of plants. McCavour holds a BFA from York University and an MFA in Fibers and Material Studies from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. McCavour shows her work in galleries nationally and internationally and has completed residencies at Harbourfront Centre’s Textile Studio in Toronto\, and the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture in Dawson City\, Yukon. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Vicki joined the San Francisco team after completing her Ph.D. in Environmental Science\, Policy\, and Management at UC Berkeley. In 2015 she returned home to Toronto with the expansion of P2 Canada. Vicki’s interest in pollinators was sparked during her undergraduate studies at the University of Guelph and has continued ever since. Her graduate research focused on understanding how native bees use gardens and habitats in cities. This focus on pollinators in human-dominated landscapes has continued throughout her career. Vicki’s contributions to pollinator research and conservation include numerous peer reviewed papers\, book chapters\, policy pieces\, planting guides\, and technical manuals. Lorraine worked as a journalist for many years both reporting and editing for various newspapers and magazines including the Nassau Tribune\, Peterborough Examiner\, Ottawa Journal\, Toronto Star\, Hands Magazine\, Plant & Garden\, Canadian Gardening\, and Gardening Life. She and her husband retired sportswriter Rick Matsumoto have two daughters and one granddaughter. They live and garden in Agincourt\, Ontario\, on the northern fringes of Scarborough. \nJanice Hunter Winton is a Chartered Professional Accountant and former registered nurse. She worked for many years in healthcare and higher education\, including at York Finch General Hospital and Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University). DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique forest bathing walk on-site with Certified Forest Therapy Guide Emma Rooney!\n\n\nWelcome the autumn season by joining us for a unique forest bathing experience on-site at the Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG). Certified Forest Therapy Guide Emma Rooney will lead you on a guided opportunity to stretch your sensory awareness while deepening your connection with nature. \nForest bathing is a practice that originated in Japan in the 1980s to address burnout caused by the technological boom. Now\, the practice has inspired people all over the world to connect with nearby nature. You will learn about some of the benefits of forest therapy and be guided in the practice. As you walk leisurely through TBG’s grounds\, you’ll receive gentle prompts to help fully engage your senses—seeing\, hearing\, smelling\, tasting\, and touching the nature surrounding you. Immerse yourself in the colours and scents of the season and deepen your relationship with the wild things in our city. \nThe walk ends with a seasonal tea\, where you’ll share some songs and poetry to allow the experience to sink in. Don’t miss your chance to try forest bathing for yourself in a beautiful outdoor setting! \nAccessibility: \nThe walk will be at a slow pace throughout\, following designated pathways and trails but sometimes covering uneven terrain. The total walk distance over the three hours is approximately 2 km. Introductions will be made while participants are standing. You may wish to bring along your own folding stool\, cushion\, or kneeling pad for sitting on the ground and a walking stick or poles. Dress appropriately for the weather and time of day. Closed-toed shoes are required. In the event of severe weather\, alternative arrangements to seek cover will be made by TBG staff. Bathrooms are available on-site. DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn all about Linocut reduction printmaking!For students with previous Linocut experience\, this course offers advanced techniques to further your growth as a printmaker. Linocut Reduction printing is a process that enables the creation of multi-colour prints from a single block of Lino. Over 2 sessions\, you’ll learn about this approach to relief printmaking and create a small edition of prints using two different colours. Please bring your own sketches\, drawings\, designs or photo reference for inspiration. Beginners welcome. Please bring an apron or wear old clothing. All materials included. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden.
