DESCRIPTION:Join us for a transformative experience\, where you’ll find inner peace and relaxation.Toronto Botanical Garden has partnered with Mira Kopanarov\, a Storyteller and Artist\, to offer a six-month breathwork experience program for creative transformation. Each class is independent and tailored towards gradual body and mind care. You can register for as many or as few as you like. The Guided Breathwork Experience program at the Toronto Botanical Garden uniquely combines breath with storytelling\, movement\, and nature to create a healthy and creative journey into the new year. Each class’ focus will be different\, progressively allowing your awareness and body to be healthier and energized. In the most challenging month of the year\, we will practice accepting and finding peace\, love\, and vibrant energy without compromising. When the new year starts in the depth of winter\, there is a story to be told and it is one of love and perseverance. Do you observe if you are constantly doing\, in your head or with your hands? Our mental and physical well-being is shaped by too many environments. The onset of mental health movements\, menopausal awareness\, entrepreneurial burn out\, elderly care and children’s emotional support voices have created a diverse community of united people who want to live quality lives. Combining breath\, art\, and community benefits\, surrounded by nature\,  fosters an environment for growth and connection. The breathwork class includes mediation\, creative practice\, active breathing for 40 mins\, and movement. The session is complimented by organic teas and healthy snack. 2+ hours. DESCRIPTION:Get your hands dirty and learn how to propagate your plants!In this workshop\, you will learn how to cut your plants! Exciting\, right? You’ll have the chance to get your hands dirty by propagating/dividing different houseplant species. Learn the basics of monitoring root health by inspecting plant cuttings at different stages of growth. Learn about the importance of various growing mediums. Participants will break into groups and work together. You will have the chance to take cuttings home and we hope that you’ll keep us posted on their progress! All materials will be provided. SUMMARY:Houseplant Clinic: What's Wrong with My Indoor Plants?
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Houseplant Clinic to diagnose and cure all your indoor plants’ ailments!Are you noticing yellow\, droopy leaves on your houseplant? Perhaps you’ve also noticed sticky leaves or an infestation of little flies or spiders. Don’t worry – TBG Horticulturalists are here to help! Join us for this in-person houseplant clinic where we will introduce common problems and their remedies and then we’ll help you identify and solve common problems that your indoor plants may be experiencing! Remember\, prevention is key when it comes to keeping your houseplants healthy.   Important: Your plant MUST be brought to TBG in a transparent plastic bags–this ‘portable greenhouse’ will keep your plant safe and keep your plant problems to your own plant. We cannot take the risk that your indoor plant problem becomes ours! Any plant not in a transparent bag will not be admitted. DESCRIPTION:Join us and learn about how to best utilize space in your designs!\n\n\nBy focusing on the size of various designs this course will illuminate questions of scale\, proportion\, and the use of space in design. The elements can be used surprisingly differently in different sizes of arrangements. Choosing plant material for your design can be challenging and creative mechanics may be needed to make it all work. SUMMARY:Birding with Beni: Winter Birding
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a winter birding nature walk!Join TBG Seasonal Horticulturist Beni to kick off the 2025 Great Backyard Bird Count. Learn how to identify common winter birds and how to contribute to citizen science through this fun\, beginner-friendly tour of the ravine and surrounding gardens. Beni will share his extensive bird knowledge\, identification\, and photography tips as you explore the ravine and surrounding areas. Bring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat. As with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. Please be patient and considerate. The tour will not be rescheduled due to a lack of bird sightings. The tour will only be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. SUMMARY:Botanical Embroidery: 2-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this beginner-friendly 2-day workshop and create two unique embroidered designs you can add to any piece of clothing!In this beginner two-day workshop you will create two hand embroidered milkweed designs and apply them to an item of clothing to create a uniquely embellished piece. The botanical designs provided in the class are based on embroideries made by Amanda McCavour. On day one of this class\, you will learn how to use water-soluble fabric to transfer the provided designs to a piece of clothing that you bring in or a small piece of linen provided in your class kit. We will start from the very beginning\, stretching our fabric in the embroidery hoop and threading our needles. On day one\, you will learn beginner stitches like running stitch\, split stitch\, seed stitch. French Knot and Fly Stitch. On the second day\, we will begin a new milkweed design and learn more advanced stitches. You will learn how couching stitch can be used with rayon seam binding and yarns provided in the class kit to create dimensional designs. During the class we will slow down and think about how stitching can be used to trace drawn lines and add a special feature to a loved item of clothing. You will learn embroidery skills that you can apply to all kinds of designs and surfaces. At the end of the class you will come away with a one of a kind embroidery that will show off the hand embroidery skills you have learned and some supplies to continue stitching. Please bring in an item of clothing that you would like to stitch onto. I recommend denim or woven items like a jean jacket\, collared shirt\, scarf\, or canvas bag. Wondering if you have the right type of item? Bring in a few options and we can discuss prior to starting the project as a class. You will also have the option of using linen fabric provided to create a patch that can be applied to an item of clothing after the class. All materials other than your item of clothing will be provided in your course kit. About Amanda McCavourAmanda McCavour is a Canadian artist who works with stitch to create large-scale embroidered installations. Her immersive installations speak to themes of memory\, environment\, colour and line. She is interested in finding connections between scientific research and decorative patterns found in textiles and wallpaper. Her lace-like pieces are made by sewing into fabric that dissolves in water. When the fabric is dissolved\, the thread drawings interlock together even without a base. Plants and their ecologies are similarly linked—a biological network is a bound system that sustains a community of plants. McCavour holds a BFA from York University and an MFA in Fibers and Material Studies from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. McCavour shows her work in galleries nationally and internationally and has completed residencies at Harbourfront Centre’s Textile Studio in Toronto\, and the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture in Dawson City\, Yukon. She has been recognized by the Ontario Crafts Council\, The Canada Council for the Arts\, The Handweavers and Spinners Guild of America\, The Ontario Society of Artists\, The Surface Design Association\, and The Embroiderers Guild of America. I love baking. I developed my love of baking as a young child with my grandmother. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature focused art programs and workshops. Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation. In 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden. A recipient of many awards\, Margaret’s accolades include two Canada Blooms’ Founder’s Gold Cups for Best in Show. Margaret has also won Best in Show on three occasions at the provincial triennial show and as a result\, has been chosen to represent Canada in two world shows. It was her greatest honour to exhibit for Canada both in Boston and in India. Margaret is currently a floral design judge accredited by the Garden Clubs of Ontario\, a horticultural judge accredited by the Royal Botanical Gardens and a rose judge accredited by the Canadian Rose Society. Margaret is also a Sogetsu Ikebana teacher and exhibitor.
