Canadian Succulents creates floral arrangements using only succulents and cacti plants. The business operates out of a greenhouse northeast of the city\, where over 300 varieties of succulents and cacti are grown. SUMMARY:Traditional Indigo Batik Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an fun-filled workshop and introduction to the traditional practice of indigo batik!\nIndigo batik is a captivating textile art form that combines the beauty of natural indigo dyeing with intricate wax-resist designs. Its origins can be traced back to ancient civilizations across various cultures and regions\, including Egypt\, China\, India\, and West Africa around 2\,000 years ago.\n \nThe technique gained prominence in Southeast Asia\, particularly in Java\, Indonesia\, where the intricate art form of “batik tulis” (hand-drawn batik) evolved and is now a widely recognized intangible cultural heritage.\n \nBatik is also widely practiced by the Miao indigenous group in Southwest China and holds historical and cultural significance for these communities to this day. Girls would learn the art of batik from their moms starting at the age of eight or nine. Since the Miao does not have their own written language\, the Miao women have had a large role to play in documenting their people’s history\, stories\, and emotions through their textile arts.\n \nDuring this 3-hour workshop\, you will learn about the history and traditional motifs of Miao batik\, as well as a significant hands-on portion dedicated to learning the traditional wax-resist dyeing method. You will create patterns using batik tools from the Miao community\, before dyeing your finished piece in natural indigo.\n \nNo prior knowledge is needed to take this workshop\, and all materials will be provided.\n \nAttendees are encouraged to think through some patterns and designs they would like to work on during the session but we will also provide additional ideas and motifs for inspiration.\n \nWe will provide all materials\, such as natural beeswax\, small electric pots\, batik painting tools (“ladao”)\, indigo dye bath\, and an iron. Additionally\, each participant is provided with upcycled\, practice fabrics as well as a piece of organic cotton handkerchief to create on.\n \nSunday\, October 4\, 1 to 4:30 p.m.\nPublic $120\, TBG Members $115 (plus applicable taxes and fees).\n \nAbout Lisa Shi\nLisa Shi is the co-founder of SlowMaking\, a cultural platform dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional craft knowledge. She has spent years travelling\, learning\, and conducting field research on cultural craft traditions\, exploring how material culture and techniques reveal universal threads of connection across global communities.\n \nHer engagement with batik is grounded in firsthand study with both Chinese and Indonesian researchers and artisans. Working primarily in painting while incorporating hand embroidery and textile elements\, she creates layered work inspired by everyday experiences\, personal history\, and the ways we make sense of the world around us.\n \nHer work has been exhibited across Canada\, the United States\, and France\, and she has exhibited at The Artist Project in Toronto since 2022. In 2023\, she was commissioned to create the official poster for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair\, and in 2022 she was an artist-in-residence at Château Orquevaux in France. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fall birding nature walk!\nFall migration is well underway! Join TBG Horticulturist and avid birder Sasan Beni for an engaging walk through the gardens and Wilket Creek Ravine\, as you seek out the wildlife that call this place home. Learn how to identify the many different species passing through and how you can help them in their journey.\n \nBring your binoculars for a better view (we will have extras on hand) and a mug/thermos for a warm beverage and post-birding chat.\n \nAs with any wildlife tour\, the spotting of birds and other wildlife is not guaranteed and is not within the control of the tour guide. Please be patient and considerate. The tour will not be rescheduled due to a lack of bird sightings. His home is a revolving door of tropical plants. Beni is also passionate about birdwatching and wildlife photography. She was amazed by the possibilities and beauty of paper quilling\, that she decided to pursue it as a full-time career. Since then\, she has been passionately mastering this technique and has created many artworks drawing inspiration from nature\, music and travel. She cuts the paper strips in different widths to add depth and dimension to her creations. She loves to play with the colours and experiment with the quilling techniques to create her own distinctive style. Deepa believes that anyone can learn this art form\, regardless of their age or skill level\, and she hosts many workshops to spread the joy of quilling. SUMMARY:Embodied Garden: 8-Week Art Therapy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Mahja Kabir\, an artist and art therapy trainee\, for an eight-week closed art therapy group for adults!\nEmbodied Garden invites participants to slow down\, connect with nature\, and explore their inner world through creative expression. Each session includes a brief embodiment meditation\, gentle check-in\, nature-inspired art-making\, and optional sharing.\n \nAcross the eight weeks\, the garden becomes both a setting and a metaphor for exploring themes of grounding\, growth\, movement\, boundaries\, protection\, change\, community\, and belonging. Each session introduces a distinct theme while contributing to an overarching exploration of embodiment\, connection\, and our relationship with the natural world.\n \nAs a closed group\, participants are invited to attend all eight sessions. The continuity of the series offers opportunities to build trust\, develop connections\, and reflect more deeply as the sessions unfold.\n \nThe group is facilitated by Mahja Kabir\, an artist and art therapy trainee who creates gentle\, creative spaces that support reflection\, care\, growth\, and connection. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of drypoint printmaking!\nIn this hands-on workshop\, you’ll be creating an edition of 5 original prints using a printmaking technique called drypoint. This medium is similar to etching\, but it’s far safer because no dangerous acids are involved. Rembrandt is a well known Old Master who excelled at both drypoint and etching.\n \nFor botanical subject matter\, please bring sketches and line drawings for inspiration and reference. The image needs to measure 4×6 inches; you’ll learn how to incise the image onto a printing plate using a drypoint needle. If you’re stuck for ideas on what to create\, there will be pressed leaves available which make lovely subjects. You’ll also learn how to ink the plate and work with an old-fashioned mechanical printing press.\n \nDrypoint gets messy\, so please wear old clothes or bring an apron. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Connect with nature and join us for a guided forest therapy walk!\nRekindle your relationship with nature this fall through a guided outdoor forest bathing walk with certified forest therapy guide Laura Bincik. At a slow pace and in community with other participants and the environment\, you will be guided by a series of invitations throughout the experience to awaken your senses and intentionally connect with nature in the present moment.\n \nWe will gather briefly indoors to prepare for the walk and consider the origin of forest bathing\, as well as some of the benefits of the practice. When we venture into the Toronto Botanical Gardens and surrounding ravine\, we will cover a loop of approximately 1.5 km on paved pathways\, lawns and bare ground\, at times encountering uneven terrain\, inclines and declines. We will be strolling\, standing and sitting (if you wish to). Your comfort and safety are most important!\n \nAs this program occurs rain or shine\, please dress for the weather and wear sturdy\, closed-toed footwear. Long pants and shirt sleeves will help to protect against insect bites. You may wish to bring a water bottle\, sunhat/glasses\, walking poles and/or a folding stool or sitting/kneeling pad.\n \nAs the walk ends\, we will gather and partake in a seasonal tea\, snacks and taste honey harvested at Toronto Botanical Garden.\n \nIn the event of severe weather or environmental conditions\, TBG staff will make alternative arrangements to the program.\n \nWashrooms are available onsite.\n \nThe program is suited for adults 18+. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015\, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature-focused art programs and workshops.\n \nAlan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018\, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation.\n \nIn 2019\, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation\, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. In 2009\, Sifu David received his Usui Reiki master certification from the Naturopathic School of Medicine in Toronto.\n \nIn 2012\, Sifu David travelled to China to compete in the International Wushi Competition in Shanghai. SUMMARY:Painting Botanical Cast Ornaments from Garden Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create your own plant-based pigments and paint one-of-a-kind botanical cast ornaments!\nWant to give a holiday gift that is not mass produced in a factory? Looking for a calming experience that beats the hustle and bustle? Join botanical artist Rebecca Fortin for an afternoon of natural paint-making and ornament painting.\n \nUnder Rebecca’s guidance\, you’ll explore how to create colour pigments from local botanicals\, such as goldenrod\, nettle\, berries\, and more.\n \nTest your plant-based pigments on watercolour paper\, including creating a holiday card. Participants will choose two plaster miniature botanical casts to paint and take home or gift for the holiday season. These ornaments are created by Rebecca\, each made using impressions of live botanicals. This workshop features botanical casts made with flowers directly from Toronto Botanical Garden\, capturing the garden’s beauty in artwork that lasts long after the blossoms fade.\n \nAll materials will be provided. No prior experience required.\n \nThis workshop is intended for ages 16+. Mature youth aged 12+ are welcome\, but must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.\n \nPlease note: Please wear practical clothes and footwear that you don’t mind getting a little messy. As with all handmade processes using real plants: results will vary\, pigments may shift in colour over time\, and each piece will have perfect imperfections that contribute to its unique character.\n \nSaturday\, November 28\, 1 to 4 p.m.\nPublic $115\, TBG Members $110 (plus applicable taxes and fees).\n \nAbout Rebecca Fortin\nRebecca Fortin is a visual artist based in rural Whitby\, Ontario\, where she creates botanical artwork rooted in the textures\, colours\, and quiet beauty of the plants around her. After a 20-year career in public health administration\, Rebecca pivoted to focus on her art practice\, completing the Drawing and Painting program at the Haliburton School of Art + Design in 2022. She now works full-time as an artist\, bringing together her background in community health promotion with her passion for connecting people to nature through art.\n \nRebecca’s work has been shown across Ontario and is held in private and corporate collections in Canada and internationally. Whether you’re coming with friends\, family\, or enjoying some creative “me time\,” you’ll leave with a beautiful handmade piece and a new skill to cherish\n \nAll materials provided. Suitable for adults and children ages 10 and above.\n \nSaturday\, December 5\, 2 to 4 p.m.\nPublic $50\, TBG Members $45 (plus applicable taxes and fees).\n \nAbout Deepa Krishnan\nDeepa Krishnan is a self-taught artist specializing in the art of paper quilling\, which involves manipulating narrow strips of paper to create exquisite designs. She discovered this art form when she was looking for a creative outlet from her engineering job. She was amazed by the possibilities and beauty of paper quilling\, that she decided to pursue it as a full-time career. Since then\, she has been passionately mastering this technique and has created many artworks drawing inspiration from nature\, music and travel. She cuts the paper strips in different widths to add depth and dimension to her creations. She loves to play with the colours and experiment with the quilling techniques to create her own distinctive style. Deepa believes that anyone can learn this art form\, regardless of their age or skill level and she hosts many workshops to spread the joy of quilling.
