Sweet Autumn

Autumn is officially here and the weather has been so sweet – so is the Clematis terniflora (sweet autumn clematis) covering the Demonstration Garden trellis.

Tricyrtis formosana 'Dark BBeauty'

The bees are still going strong and are attracted to fall-flowering Tricyrtis formosana ‘Dark Beauty’ (toad-lily).  The lavender-mauve flowers are heavily spotted with purple (I love purple!).

Rosa Sweet Vigorosa 'KORdatura'

This autumn many of our roses are covered in flowers, including Rosa Sweet Vigorosa ‘KORdatura’ (ground cover rose) on the Terrace West Bank.  The deep pink blooms are cupped open displaying the yellow stamens.

Rosa Bonica 'MEIdomonac'

Also on the Terrace West Bank, you will find Rosa Bonica ‘MEIdomonac’ (modern shrub rose) blooming profusely.  The semi-double light pink flowers are held on spreading branches, thus making this rose an excellent ground cover choice.

Calamagrostis brachytricha

Love ’em or hate ’em, ornamental grasses are a-plenty in our garden.  Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean feather reed grass) is kept in check from self-sowing as freely as it would like, by dead-heading the flowers before they mature.

Cotoneaster berries

Cotoneaster horizontalis (bearberry cotoneaster) is great for planting on slopes and over walls, as demonstrated on the Terrace- West Bank.  The dense, shiny green leaves are complimented by rich red berries in autumn.
