3rd Annual Poetry Contest

Authors of Soul – The Garden Chapter presents New Beginnings Spring Season

3rd Annual Poetry Contest at the Toronto Botanical Garden

Open to All ages

Submissions: Entries may be submitted in person at Toronto Botanical Garden’s Weston Family Library or online (see below).

Poem Judging Criteria: Poems that make us laugh out loud or touch our heart will be awarded a special prize.

Submissions open: Monday, April 1, 2019
Poem Submission deadline: Tuesday, April 30th, 2019

Winners will be contacted and invited to the Authors of Soul Poetry Contest celebrations in the library on Monday, June 24, 2019.

3 Poetry Contest Categories

Category #1 Mother Nature Poem (Free Verse Poem)

Your Poetic Challenge is to take a walk in the gardens through your own path and write a poem based on your own experience from being with nature.

Prizes for this category:

1st Place

  • 2 tickets to this year’s Through the Garden Gate: The Beach
  • Winning poem put on display in Weston Family Library
  • Official invitation to join the Authors of Soul poetry group
  • Complimentary TBG membership for 1 year*

2nd Place

  • Official invitation to join the Authors of Soul poetry group
  • Poem will be put on display in Weston Family Library
  • Complimentary TBG membership for 1 year*
  • $25 certificate for a TBG class

3rd Place

  • Official invitation to join the Authors of Soul poetry group
  • Poem will be placed on display in Weston Family Library
  • Complimentary TBG membership for 1 year*

*In the event that the winner is already a TBG member, the membership prize may be given as a gift.

*New* Category #2 Haiku Style Poem

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place poems in this category. Winning poems will receive a prize package given by the Authors of Soul Poetry Group.

Line #1 – Must contain 5 syllables

Line #2 – Must contain 7 syllables

Line #3 – Must contain 5 syllables

*New* Category #3 Natural Wonder Poem

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place poems in this category. Winning poems will receive a prize package given by the Authors of Soul Poetry Group.

This category is about the importance of nature or the wonder of nature.  Write a poem about the importance of nature in our world.  Topics may consist of past historical events (ex: floods, ice storms, wind storms, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc…), current events (ex: pollution, storms, volcano eruptions, etc…) or potential future natural occurrences, either real or imagined.  The overall perspective is the importance of nature, the wonder of nature.
