Art Exhibit | Yugen Artists Art Exhibit | Yugen Artists

Opening Reception: 2 to 4 p.m. (Public Welcome)

Yugen Artists is a group of six artists from multi-cultural backgrounds involved in the practice of Sumi-e in Toronto. Led by Hiroshi Yamamoto, a renowned Japanese Canadian artist and mentor to the other 5 members of the group, Mr. Yamamoto has held over 20 exhibitions in Toronto and Japan.  The other members are Elizabeth Rittinger, Nicole Tamir, Neli Iordanova, Kate Cherney and Azra Rashid, each with over 15 years of Sumi-e study and practice, and participation in several exhibitions around Toronto.

A part of Yugen Artists’ mission is to promote this ancient form of brush painting to a wider audience locally and to demonstrate the diversity of interpretation while still adhering to the aesthetics and philosophy embodied in Sumi-e. This exhibition will showcase both classic and contemporary forms, sources of inspiration, and cross-cultural practice of Sumi-e by non-Japanese artists. It is also hoped to inspire greater interest in learning and appreciation among a multi-cultural community.

The theme for this exhibition will be nature-oriented, as befits both the traditional subjects of sumi-e and the proposed location, with emphasis on plants, flowers, seasons etc.
