From the Stacks: Summer Art Gallery Exhibition

This summer, the TBG Art Gallery, located in the Weston Family Library, will feature works focusing on plants and nature expressed through textile arts. On the heels of the popular HortiCULTURE Salon Series night delivered by Natalia Nekrassova, the Textile Museum of Canada’s Curator of Collections and Research, this summer’s exhibition will showcase two artists whose captivating techniques reveal sharply contrasting perspectives of nature: Penny Milton, and the late Renée White.

Penny Milton is an imaginative artist who creates forest and landscape pieces constructed from a combination of techniques and materials. Her works are truly original, and we’re thrilled to have them on display.

Renée White was the editor of The Gloxinian (now titled Gesneriads: The Journal for Gesneriad Growers), and between 1977 and 1980, produced twelve needlepoint prints of African violets and gesneriads. In the late 1980s, the pieces were donated to the Smithsonian Institution which accepted the gift, but was not able to display them. They remained in storage until 2009 when ownership was transferred to the Gesneriad Society of America. In 2013, the Toronto Botanical Garden accepted the twelve pieces as a donation from the Gesneriad Society. They will be on display in the Weston Family Library for the summer exhibition, and in September will move to a permanent home in the building.

The summer exhibition will be on display beginning June 20th, the same date as the TBG Lecture: The Culture of Queer Flowers with Alison Syme, Associate Professor of Modern Art, University of Toronto at 7:30 p.m. Before the lecture there will be an opening celebration in the library from 6 to 7:15 p.m. The exhibition will run until September 19th.

The TBG Art Gallery is accessible during the Library’s open hours: Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

You won’t want to miss this exhibition!
