“A modest garden contains, for those who know how to look and to wait, more instruction than a library.” – Henri-Frédéric Amiel
I can’t say for sure, but I’m willing to bet that Sir Henri-Frédéric Amiel would have a change of tune about libraries if he could visit ours at TBG. Over the last few months we have been very busy preparing for some exciting changes to the physical and virtual spaces of the library. I’m excited to finally share the news about these updates with you:
New Online Library Catalogue
At long last, the library’s new web-based catalogue is online and available for use! After the loss of our former catalogue in early 2012, we embarked on a project to migrate the library catalogue to a new web-based platform with modern features and self-service tools. We’re excited to finally unveil this system for our members, and to have a functioning online catalogue once again. Please visit www.torontobotanicalgarden.ca/library and click “Search the Library” (located on the right beneath membership registration) to access the new library catalogue. There you will also find a video tutorial for an orientation on how to login to your library account, and use the many new features of the new catalogue.
New Location for Floral Design Titles
Ever since arriving in my position with TBG, one of the questions that I receive most often about library collections is why there are two separate locations for flower arrangement and floral design. Thanks to the help from library volunteers and a Seneca College field placement student, the many shelves of floral design titles have been reclassified and relocated to a new area of the stacks. I am happy to share that they have been consolidated into a single shelving location with the flower arrangement titles, and both subjects can now be found in the 709 section. This area is in the southwest corner of the library.

New Course in Gardening on the Web Program Series:
TBG’s Winter Program Guide will include a new course in the library’s Gardening on the Web series, called iGardening. This course is designed for getting the most out of your smartphone device(s) in the garden. A short description: “Using apps and tools on your iPad, iPhone and other smartphones, we will explore many ways to garden from your mobile device. Please bring your own mobile device.”
In addition to iGardening, I will be offering other courses from the Gardening on the Web series: Computer Basics, Searching the Web, Managing Your Digital Photos and the popular Garden Blogging.
Lastly, spread the word about the upcoming BOOK SALE during TBG’s annual Holiday Open House on Thursday, Dec. 5th from noon to 9:30 p.m. in the Weston Family Library!
See you in the Library!
