What’s In Bloom: Hibiscus & Hydrangea

By | What's In Bloom | August 16, 2012 | No comments

It’s late summer and here at the TBG perennial hibiscus and cultivars of hydrangea are in full flower.  Seen here, Hibiscus ‘Blue River II’, in white – which really stands out against all the yellow & orange this time of year.

Located at the south end of the Perennial Border, a display of hydrangea are in full flower.  Here, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Phantom’ is actually changing colour already in mid-August.

Another view of the south end of the Perennial Border in full bloom with Verbena bonariensis (Brazilian verbena) and Hydrangea.

Also coming into full flower, again as with the bulk of the season a little early, are many varieties of anemone.  Shown here in the Entry Garden is Anemone tomentosa ‘Robustissima’.

Still going strong despite the somewhat late arrival of Japanese beetles – at least to the TBG – is Rosa ‘Mary Rose’ (Modern shrub rose) on the west side of the building, West View Terrace.  A number of rose cultivars are still blooming strong with persistent dead heading.

Sandra Pella about the author: Sandra Pella

Sandra Pella has worked as Head Gardener of the Toronto Botanical Garden since 2008. She holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario, and upon graduation worked in the financial sector until the pull of plants was too much to resist, whereupon she found herself at Janet Anderson Perennials (formerly JEA Perennials) as a horticultural technician. She has been the Perennial Manager at Summerhill Nursery & Floral followed by the Assistant Horticulturist at the TBG prior to its renovation. Sandra worked as a Gardener for two seasons with the City of Toronto as well as seasonal Gardener for the TBG prior to being named Head Gardener. She is self-taught in the field and thus greatly appreciated the experience a gardening internship in 2009 at Great Dixter in the UK brought to her. Sandra has a regular What’s In Bloom blog and is one of the spokespeople for the TBG.
